Some things to do today to prep for the extreme cold...
✅Make sure the animals under your care have access to appropriate shelter/warmth/non-frozen drinking water, etc.
✅Disconnect garden hoses from spigots. Cover spigots, particularly those that are not frost-proof spigots. If you aren't sure, better safe than sorry.
✅ Close crawl space vents around your home to keep coldest temps further away from your crawl space plumbing
✅Check your attic to make sure any plumbing up there is well insulated and not exposed (looking at you Nolensville folks and your residential fire sprinklers)
✅Make sure lawn irrigation systems are off and winterized
✅Have a cold kit in your vehicle if you must travel (blankets, first aid, food, water, etc)
✅Locate your water shutoffs in your home and *know how to use them* (at meter and in your home). Remember, frozen pipes may not burst until they start to thaw. So, don't let your guard down once temps go above freezing.
✅Make sure any heat sources you use indoors are safe for such. Don't be the next carbon monoxide statistic.
✅Drip faucets in your home, especially those faucets with plumbing against exterior walls.
✅Flush toilets periodically that have plumbing near exterior walls. This is an issue at my house with one of our bathrooms. Know your home.
✅This list is not exhaustive. Spend some time today just walking around identifying things that could become issues later. You'll feel better if you do.
