It was heartening to see John Reid—now the official Republican nominee for Virginia Lieutenant Governor—receive a warm welcome when he spoke at the Loudoun County Republican Committee last night.

I first came to know John two years ago after the release of my book Mao’s America. He interviewed me twice on his radio show, and later invited me to speak at his Virginia Council event. Through these experiences, I learned that he as a principled, proven conservative.

Shockingly, John is now under attack—not from the left, but from a faction on the far right demanding he step down. Their attacks are not based on his conservative record, but on his identity as an openly gay man. The tactics they employ—lies, smears, even blackmail—are disturbingly reminiscent of those used by the left and by Communist regimes.

To those far-right extremists, I say this: we, the voters, will decide who represents us. And to John Reid, I say—fight, fight, fight!
