“We need to inoculate our children against the seductive idea of victimhood.”
I didn’t think I could be a bigger fan of @Miss_Snuffy but I was wrong. Powerful speech! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The full UK State Pension is now worth around £12,548 a year. That's less than half the earnings of someone working full-time on the National Minimum Wage, despite many pensioners paying taxes and National Insurance for 40, 50 or even 60 years.
Yet every time the Treasury needs money, the same voices appear demanding the Triple Lock be scrapped.
Why?
State pension spending is forecast at around £154 billion this year, but that supports over 13 million pensioners, many of whom rely on it as their primary income. Meanwhile, billions continue to disappear into failed projects, government waste, bureaucracy, consultants, quangos and policies that deliver little value to ordinary taxpayers.
The Triple Lock isn't some gold-plated luxury. It exists because politicians allowed the State Pension to fall behind for decades. Even today, a full State Pension is barely above the poverty line and is nowhere near a typical working wage.
If politicians want to save money, start with waste, inefficiency and failed spending programmes.
Leave pensioners alone.
They worked, they paid in, they built this country and they deserve dignity in retirement, not another raid on their income.
Andrew do you know WHY people chose independent education? I'll give you a few examples - often those in the medical sector use it so that they can go to work. It caters for wrap around care and allows shift patterns. Those in the armed forces use Indy so that their children can board and they can defend our country. Those who have SEND children use it because State does not provide for them. Those who feel the school suits their child better use it. Equally, those who wish to have this from the state sector move to areas where the schools are outstanding - easily equally indy - and buy a house in an expensive area. Disparity between State schools is where you need to be looking for a 'leg up' - oh and the 93% club. If you cite smaller class sizes as a positive effect of Indy can you please explain to me why @bphillipsonMP has an opportunity to provide that for state with falling birth rates but choses to close schools instead? And finally - if you cant quite grasp that it is NOT a VAT exemption then I seriously question your ability to be an MP. I suspect you will not engage in this thread but perhaps at least do the decent thing, take on board the comments and reflect. At this stage you sound rather bitter at some parents chosing something you dont like. Regards, Ana. State educated.
@kevinhollinrake This is the most serious situation that the UK's 5th biggest sector and 3rd largest employer has ever been in.
We're witnessing closure after closure, redundancy after redundancy.
This is on The Chancellor. She is allowing this to happen.
This is Sean Egan. He joined Morrisons at the age of 17.
After 29 years of dedication at supermarket chain, he was dismissed for confronting a shoplifter, which led to a scuffle with thief who spat at him.
A shameful decision by @Morrisons.
He should be thanked, not sacked.
I am still shaking from a soul-crushing Uber ride today in Dublin. It started with "Where are you from?" I said Iran, and the driver's face lit up as he thought he'd found a partner in his hate. He looked at me and said, "It must be crushing what the f***ing Israelis are doing to your country."
The moment I pushed back, the moment I told him the truth, that I support Israel and want to see the regime in Iran fall, he erupted in pure rage.
He began screaming about his uncle's high rank in the IRA, glorifying terror as a "success story" to justify the total erasure of Israel. To be trapped in a car with that level of brainwashed vitriol, being shamed and attacked for defending the Jewish people, is a burden I can't describe.
Being Iranian is so incredibly taxing. You spend your life fighting the regime that destroyed your home, only to have strangers weaponise your identity to justify their antisemitism. To my Jewish friends: I see the hate you face. I will never stop standing with you, no matter how much it costs. 🇮🇱🦁☀️
Not only was it extremely lovely to wake up to so many pics of people’s dogs, it was also hugely heartening to note the universal outcry at the BBC’s sudden, & rather transparent, motivation to ‘suggest’ that we, as a country, might have taken our love for dogs “a bit too far…”

The smartest thing he’s said in decades!
Yes 🙌 I remember watching this in Monte Cassino Italy… we were staying with friends in Attina above MC but no TV there so we went down to their sons on MC to watch
@anne_joseypye My 89 yr old mum was in hospital, disoriented and vulnerable. A man walked into her room, not realising I was there, our eyes locked and in that moment I knew, and he knew I knew, his intentions.
