The faith and sacrifice of the pioneers are not merely part of our history. They are part of our heritage as a covenant people. 

Today we honor those faithful Latter-day Saint pioneers who established homes, communities, and temples in the mountain West—including those who labored for 40 years to build the Salt Lake Temple. Their efforts were motivated by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and trust in His promises. 

As we celebrate Pioneer Day, we express gratitude for all who have helped build the Lord's kingdom, both past and present. Their examples remind us that discipleship requires faith, sacrifice, and steadfastness in keeping sacred covenants.

A really fun Father’s Day gift for me. My 4-year-old was able to offer his first prayer in primary by signing it.

Every milestone hits my emotions like a ton of bricks. He was happy to be there, happy to share his prayer, and happy to be included.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and serene lakes, Salzburg, Austria has a quiet beauty that has long touched our hearts. Harriet and I felt a deep sense of gratitude as we returned to this remarkable place—a place filled with sacred memories. 

I was serving in the Europe West Area Presidency when Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles—who had once served as a young missionary in Salzburg in 1937—organized the Salzburg Austria Stake in 1997. 

Now, nearly 30 years after that special occasion, I was blessed to dedicate the beautifully renovated Salzburg Stake Center. Moments like these remind us that the Lord is mindful of His children, wherever they may be. 

We express heartfelt gratitude for the faithful members who are building up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this land. Much of what has been accomplished is the result of quiet devotion—of disciples, both seen and unseen, who follow the Savior with humble, steadfast faith. 

I pray that this chapel will always be a house of peace—where Jesus Christ is at the center, where His love is felt, and where all are joyfully invited to come unto Him.

Today, my counselors in the First Presidency and I were grateful for the opportunity to visit the Salt Lake Temple, which has been undergoing a significant renovation since 2020.

We look forward to welcoming people from throughout the world during the Salt Lake Temple Celebration and open house, to be held from April through October 2027.

Above all, we look forward to teaching about the sacred purposes of temples throughout the world. In the temple, faithful men and women receive divine instruction, sacred responsibilities, and spiritual power.

It is in the temple that eternal covenants are made that bind us and our families to our Heavenly Father and to one another for eternity.

For nearly six years, the Salt Lake Temple has been surrounded by scaffolding that supported the sacred structure as it was renovated. This week, the scaffolding has been removed, marking another milestone.

As the scaffolding comes down, consider the supports in our lives that steady and strengthen us: faith in God, family and the Savior's love.

From April through October 2027, whether in person or virtually, all are invited to experience the Salt Lake Temple Celebration, including the opportunity to tour the interior of this house of the Lord.

President Jeffrey R. Holland, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died Saturday, Dec. 27 at 3:15 a.m. MST, at age 85, from complications associated with kidney disease.

Known for his words and the way he expressed them, President Holland will be remembered for the love he shared in nations around the world, where he taught and testified of the reality of Jesus Christ. An educator by profession, he inspired generations with his general conference talks, devotional addresses, missionary messages and social media posts. In almost every corner of the globe, he declared that the “gospel of Jesus Christ is personally precious, everlastingly hopeful and eternally true.”

Tonight, I brought the youth from our local LDS congregation to the BYU basketball game. Earlier in week, I asked Richie if he would come spend some time with us after the game tonight. He said yes, and he did. He shared how his mission impacted his life. And encouraged these boys to go on one someday. This is type of person he is. He’s a great basketball player yes (balled out tonight). But he’s an even better person. He’s a man of God and a great example to these youth. Thanks Richie.
