#BREAKING: The central government has moved to exclude the Chief Justice of India as a member of the selection committee that will choose Chief and other Election Commissioners of India.

The Supreme Court judgement had held that its judgement including the CJI in the selection committee will hold good until the centre brings in a law.

The government has moved to do just that. The Prime minister and his Cabinet Minister will get two votes out of three.

Also, the qualification for being an Election Commissioner is now a person who is or has held a post equivalent to the Secretary to the Government of India.

Not only does this Bill defeat the spirit of the Supreme Court's judgement that highlighted the need for an "independent" election commission, but it also completely surrenders a constitutional body to the party in power.

It reduces the body to just what the Bill considers eligible- a secretary.
