@dougclow Maybe smoke alarms might be in the category of things people usually don't buy themselves (like they come with the house or whatever) which usually leads to terrible quality?

@steve_p_uk Related: how can you tell if paying more for a kettle will get a longer-lasting one vs 'more stylish' etc... Ours has lasted ~a decade but my parents had the same model which died after a couple years so I guess we're just lucky (also we don't drink as much tea as my mum)
