Hockey Parents:

There's one thing I feel is lacking when it comes to a value that needs to be continually reinforced with our kids coming up through youth hockey today.

Pride in the front of the jersey.

Unfortunately, the way that our hockey culture is right now, there’s a lot of:

What have you done for me lately? And how can you get my kid to the next level?

At the end of the day, hockey only takes us so far. And one of the most important life skills that we have to preach more is learning how to be part of a team.

And if we (parents, coaches, adults) can teach our kids to collectively have pride in the organization they are a part of…to really work for something that is bigger than just themselves, we are setting them up for success for life after hockey.

There’s so much focus on the journey of “making it.” And sure, we have to instill the skill and qualities that will help our kids achieve their dreams in this game.

But the constant focus on the “ME” and not the “WE” is doing our kids such a disservice for the life skills they’ll need to conquer the real world.

The “WE” is something we need to see a lot more of in our youth hockey culture.
