I refuse to be sucked into civic Cleveland’s twitter debate about voter turnout — but I’m always proud to be from Ward 1. They’ve continuously led the east side (& at times, the city) on turnout. I’m afraid of what we’ll begin to lose as the seniors continue to transition.
The most humbling personal and professional lesson for me this year has been that sometimes you’ll never get credited, acknowledged or thanked for the work you put in.
Sometimes it’s just between you and God. And that has to be enough.
Every fall I rewatch the West Wing. And there’s no better time to start this year than tonight. That Howard Bison closed the job at the debate. YOU KNOW!
People who spend their own time to organize, plan and document community change like @juliankhan did don’t do it for looks. But I’m glad his name is being spoken, specifically. Very few people in Cle who I respect from a deep, earnest place. He’s one.
When residents are engaged and advocating for their community, anything can happen – like we just saw with Buckeye getting its bank back. I want to thank @juliankhan and all the grassroots leaders for their tireless devotion to their neighborhood.

And now I’m harassing my group chat about civic engagement camp for youth. They’re gonna be sick of me. 🤣
I have more ideas than I have time or Google storage space.
Started today with very early morning emails because there’s a Legacy LIVE event tomorrow and I need to prep (https://t.co/xMoxPKxIKA) for those who are interested.
So I watch Girls State on Apple TV. An interesting watch about a teen govt camp I’d never heard of. Check it out.
When they roll the credits, each featured teen shows where they went to college. My favorite was a Nigerian American young lady who told her white counterparts she wouldn’t be speaking Igbo for them. Of course she’s Howard class of ‘27. Go baby Bison, go!
The transition over the last few years from longstanding (mostly male and non Black) to new leadership was a test for civic Cleveland. And we are failing, miserably.
