Just found out that a great Canadian has passed away.
George MacDonell died in Toronto at the age of 100 last Saturday, April 15, 2023.
Read on about this truly inspirational, truly great Canadian.
George was one of the last surviving veterans of the Battle of Hong Kong - Canada’s first land combat of the Second World War.
On December 8, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is Canada’s Pearl Harbor. Both Hong Kong & Pearl Harbor were simultaneous, surprise attacks.
George and his fellow 1,975 Canadian soldiers fought bravely, against overwhelming odds, to defend Hong Kongers, including my father & his family.
The fighting was so intense, it led to the posthumous award of a Victoria Cross to Winnipeger John Robert Osborn.
Hundreds of Canadian soldiers died in the battle. Hundreds more were wounded. The battle resulted in one of the highest casualty rates for Canadians of the entire war, nearly 50%.
The survivors - George included - were taken POW for 4 years. By war’s end, his weight had dropped to 110 lbs.
110 lbs. George was well over 6 feet. You can see how tall he is in the photo; I’m 5’8”.
But, that’s not the end of his remarkable story.
After being liberated as a POW, George came back to Canada and coalesced for half a year in hospital to regain his strength.
He had dropped out of high school before the war. So, he finished high school. He applied and got accepted to @UofT. After university, he worked in the private sector and eventually became VP & Group Executive of Canadian General Electric.
After serving as a @generalelectric executive, he was appointed by Premier William Davis as Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade & Technology where he continued to build his province and his country.
Truly a member of the Greatest Generation. They were born in aftermath of the chaos of the First World War, lived through the Great Depression, fought to defend freedom & democracy, and then came home to build the post-war Canada we have all benefitted from. They rolled up their sleeves, got to work, and got the job done. They did it all without complaint or entitlement. (In 1946, there was no public healthcare, no CPP, no OAS, no GIS, etc.) They were serious in character and resolute in resolve.
I first had the privilege of meeting George MacDonell in the late 1990s when he got involved in the Memory Project, which documents the personal stories of Canada’s war veterans.

Watched #SaveTheLight by Polina Pologenceva. #Ukraine has been on the news but its the first time I get a peek into lives of ordinary people after 24Feb. Many thoughts & reflections popped up. Thank you @J_Freedman_msk and UKR/HK Playreading Festival.

I spoke to “Bob”, the Hong Kong protester who got dragged into the Chinese consulate in Manchester when protesting outside. He was terrified: he sustained injuries on his head, face, neck, back and waist.

"Women and girls in Iran are not risking their lives in hopes of wearing a mini-skirt to school or office. They are fighting tooth and nail to claim their freedom of choice and their right to live life as they please," writes Tara Kangarlou

@BailingguoNews podcast featured @MikeSmithAFR - was just expecting to hear his weird (and interesting) experience in China but they touched on #HongKong & the 2019 stuff🥺 truly grateful for that! Definitely recommend this episode.
On the way out after the match together. Regardless the scoreline, we are, always, together. We are Hong Kong 🇭🇰 12,264 in attendance today, and it's been an amazing night, thank you & well done all. Hope to see more people at #HKPL too! #hkfootball
