Agree.

It’s similar to owning stock or a derivative of any stock or a rental property if I may. Just like there are operating costs even for a home cars also need maintenance.

If you do drive it for Uber/Doordash it generates revenue like rent does too.

The only argument that can be made is it’s a depreciating “asset”. But you never know. The used car market took off during the pandemic and people have actually made money of selling their used old cars.

Just sharing my initial thoughts of the new @Rivian vehicles. Great job guys.

Positives:

1. The way they handled the design. No rookie mistake here. They kept the most important aspects of the cars same to their previous models. Greatly helps with supply chain and brand/design recognition. Kudos!

2. ⁠NACS, they have the infra from @Tesla to use (shows a company actually follows their motto of accelerating sustainability through healthy competetion and helping other budding EV companies, kudos @Tesla). So, charging will not be as big of a corcern had they decided against it. Good thinking! It’s very important for the customer

3. The one feature which was super nice was the scroll wheels. Loved the thought and software haptic feedbacks based on the use-case.

Challenges:

1. Highly doubt the cars will come out at the same prices in 2026(might vary based on trims). They are going to lose a ton of money in designing manufacturing procedures. At least the silver lining looks like since this has been well received by the initial audience. The initial deposits might help them 👍

2. ⁠Service is a big challenge for all EVs. Especially at scale. Considering the issues reported by folks on the current vehicles. That might have to improve rapidly as well.

Gripe:
Their naming. This is very strange to me. R1s are flagships. R2 and R3 are lower models respectively. I like the implementation. Just not the naming. Maybe should have branched them out as separate models or should have had as ascending series( like BMW 7 series and Mercedes S class)
