At #Udaan2026, Amanda Devercelli, Global Early Childhood Expert and Former Global Lead for Early Childhood Development at the World Bank Group, took us from Peru to the world.

She showed how sustained political commitment, smarter spending and a valued workforce can transform outcomes for young children. Drawing on 15 years at the World Bank, she made a powerful case that early childhood has moved from a niche investment to a global priority, and that the cost of not investing is already being paid.

The world is investing in its youngest children. India has every ingredient to lead the way. 🚀🌏

Correction - Sampath Kumar is Development Commissioner and CEO, Meghalaya ECD Mission, Govt. of Meghalaya

[Rocket Learning @learning_rocket]

At #Udaan2026, Sampath Kumar (Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner, Government of Meghalaya) and Dr. Dinesh Arora (Principal Health Specialist, Asian Development Bank) joined our co-founder Namya Mahajan for a fireside chat on building early childhood systems that work.

They discussed how states can make early childhood a development priority. Sampath Kumar shared how Meghalaya cut stunting from 46% to 36% by building leadership at every level, working across departments, and supporting parents as well as children.

Dr. Arora called for a single ECD mission that measures children’s cognitive and social-emotional development alongside nutrition, and noted that ECD now features in ADB’s India strategy for the first time.

The takeaway: early childhood needs government ownership, a mission-mode structure, and a sharp focus on implementation.

Anganwadis play a vital role in shaping a child’s early years. Strengthening these centres today is key to building a strong foundation for every child’s tomorrow.

At #Udaan2026, the conversation “Lessons from Academia” brought together four researchers to connect the evidence on early childhood with the decisions that shape children’s everyday lives.

Moderated by our Education and Content Lead, Sukhna Sawhney, the takeaway from the discussion was that the evidence for investing in early childhood is strong. What India needs now is more research on costs, implementation and scale, built in close partnership with governments and the communities they serve.

Which insight would you like to see put into practice more widely?

We are proud to share Business Standard’s coverage of #Udaan2026, India’s largest convening on Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE).

Under the theme “From Surviving to Thriving,” Udaan 2026 brought together leaders from government, research, philanthropy, civil society and technology. They examined what it will take to give every child in India a strong foundation in the early years, when 85% of brain development takes place.

In the words of our co-founders
“Every child deserves more than simply surviving the early years. They deserve the opportunity to thrive. Udaan 2026 reinforced that India has both the ideas and the will to make this possible at scale.”
