Caesar had 22,000 men on Aug. 9, 48 BC, at Pharalus. Pompey had nearly twice as many.

Pompey also had 7,000 cavalry against Caesar's 1,000. On paper, it wasn't close.

Caesar had studied Pompey's cavalry commander anyway.

He pulled 3,000 veterans from his third line and gave them an order that broke the rules of Roman warfare.

Don't throw your javelins. Hold them like spears.

Drive them up into the riders' faces.

Infantry doesn't charge cavalry. That's not how it works.

Except Caesar wasn't fighting the normal way that day.

Pompey's horsemen never trained for this. They trained for glory.

When the veterans rose and drove steel toward their faces, the riders flinched, wheeled, and ran.

The retreat collapsed the entire flank.

By afternoon, a battle that started with Pompey's men so confident of victory they'd already set their camp tables for a feast was over.

Caesar had studied his enemy's character better than his numbers, and that's what decided it.

The plain where this happened still exists, outside the town of Farsala in central Greece..... flat, dry, unremarkable to look at, which is part of what makes it strange to see in person.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says a decision has been made to station 30,000–50,000 North Koreans in Russia. If true, it could prolong and intensify the war in Ukraine.

The latest polls put Marine Le Pen at 35% in the first round of France's next presidential election, giving her a 19-point lead over her nearest rival, former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, who is on around 16%.

Le Pen remains the clear frontrunner and it’s widely believed that Édouard Philippe is the only other candidate who stands a chance to challenge her in the second round of the election.

A new survey conducted after the Islamist terrorist attack at Berlin Pride found that 51% of Germans no longer believe Germany is a stable and safe country, while only 37% still consider it safe.

The poll also found that 39% of respondents said they feel less safe following the attack, 54% said their sense of security had not changed, and 7% said they now feel safer.

The country’s GDP is approaching €1 trillion as the economy continues its rapid growth.

Poland has taken sixth place in the EU rankings, overtaking Belgium, Sweden, Ireland and Austria.

The EU’s top five largest economies remain unchanged: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

According to forecasts, Poland could overtake Switzerland in terms of nominal GDP by 2028 and enter the world’s top 20 largest economies.
