Spent the 1st anniversary of the war in Konstantinivka just northwest of Bahkmut. As the Russians continue to push in all directions around Bahkmut, Konstantinivka is now on the front line. 500lb bomb crater at entrance if cultural center.
More heroic Ukrainians holding the line in south Donbas. Under blizzard conditions, Git and Vloda showed me their town - Toretsk. less than a mile from the Russians. Within machine gun range of the Russians Olga continued to run the town hall and administration.
A sea of memorial flags greets visitors to Maidan Square in Kyiv. In small clusters among the yellow and blue of are flags representing international volunteers killed fighting here over the past 10 months. Among them, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Sweden, the UK, Canada and the US.
In Kherson in the square where Russian troops fired on protestors 10 mos ago and now fire artillery into the city. Next to the apartment we stayed in, a former Russian barracks destroyed by a precision strike courtesy of US HIMARS. The rest of the neighborhood was untouched.
Visited the recently liberated city of Kherson in South Ukraine. Listened to harrowing tales of the occupation and with some Ukrainian volunteers looked at the Russians just across the river as they fired artillery into the city every five minutes as the people tried to rebuild.
Three air raid alerts and two barrages of missiles on the city center in Kyiv over past 72 hours. Residents of Kyiv still came out on New Years to show their spirit and resolve.
