Words matter. Even single words.
There’s a massive difference between MY wife and YOUR wife, between trusting in CHRIST or trusting in YOURSELF, and whether pastors can be MEN or WOMEN.
Sometimes one word makes all the difference. Saying otherwise is not the TRUTH but a LIE.
@RickWarren Or, it could be that the “membership” numbers were extremely inflated. Our church alone has quadrupled in attendance over the last 3 years while “membership” was cut significantly. We’re not alone, many churches are no longer looking to just boost their “member” numbers.
Every Christian should desire church growth, but only the right kind of church growth. Sheep-swapping, pragmatic inflation, and consumeristic crowds may multiply numbers, but they do not multiply disciples. Preach, teach, share, pray, invest, and then leave the results to God.
“The reason I’m president of the Southern Baptist Convention is because our churches do not agree with that—and have taken action to correct those things.”

We tend to say, “The church grew.”
Acts tends to say, “The word spread.”
We talk about church growth.
Acts talks about word growth.
Preach the word and let God take care of the size of your church.

When preaching sounds more like Dr. Phil’s motivation and Oprah’s opinions than St. Paul’s instructions and Jesus' teachings, it is likely that such preaching falls short of truths found in the Bible.
“Why do pastors so often treat congregations with the impatience and violence of developers developing a shopping mall instead of the patient devotion of a farmer cultivating a field? The shopping mall will be abandoned in disrepair in 50 years; the field will be healthy…
I am all for church planting, but I think it's time we start talking honestly about it.
If you aren't prepared to pastor a church, you aren't called to plant a church.
Planters must be pastors.
