HAWKS IN GAUTENG NAB DRUG KINGPIN

A Nigerian national, aged (56) has been arrested by the East Rand based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation on Thursday, 13 August 2026 for contravention of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992 as well as contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act 7 of 2013.

In March 2026 five South African women, Zodwa Patience Mthombeni, Nomagcisa Dayimane, Precious Nemukondeni Mulweli, Thule Shikwambane and Vuyokazi Toko who were heading to Japan were arrested at the OR Tambo International airport after they were found to be in possession of 11,40kg of cocaine with an estimated value of R4,5 million.

Investigations revealed that the women were recruited as drug mules by a Nigerian national based in Kempton Park.

Further investigations led members of the Hawks’ SOCI team to a lodge in Kempton Park on Thursday, 13 August 2026 were they arrested the alleged kingpin.

The suspect is expected to make his first appearance before the Kempton Park Magistrate Court on Monday, 17 August 2026 where he faces the above mentioned charges.

Brewing traditional beer in the townships was one of the only viable sources of income for women, which led the government to make home brewing illegal as well as set up their own municipal beer halls in the city. Not only were men spending the family income in these infamous beer halls, but the revenue they generated supported the apartheid machinery. The women were outraged. In 1959, brutal police raids aimed at smashing up home brewing led to tremendous anger, riots and killings by the police at Cato Manor. Dorothy Nyembe called for a total boycott of the beer halls. In huge demonstrations, women armed with sticks marched into the beer-halls, attacking men who were drinking, and wrecking the facilities, despite the presence of police. The drinkers fled.
