I have had zero contact from @SteveBarclay, @AmandaPritchard, @DHSCgovuk or anyone at NHS leadership following my letter about setting up a meeting with Equitix to reopen the three Rutherford facilities in order to clear the cancer backlog.

I'm sorry to say, but the Department of Health is either being dishonest or has done a woeful lack of research into the centres and Proton Beam Therapy. Which is it? Both are unacceptable

Wrong on three points.

They say:

'the ex-Rutherford sites do not meet the requirements for treating NHS patients with PBT, and that there is currently excess capacity at existing NHS sites for this treatment.'

Firstly these facilities are at the cutting edge of proton technology - worth hundreds of millions.

Second, PBT makes up roughly 30% of the Rutherford capability - so what about the high quality radiotherapy machines? Chemotherapy suites? Are they surplus to requirements with record breaking waits? I think not.

Finally, there is only excess capacity at their proton sites because they ration it so severely. We treat less than 1% of radiotherapy patients with PBT.

In EU countries that's roughly 10%, the US 25%. We have fallen severely behind.
