Enzo Maresca was the third highest paid coach in the Premier League.
When he was hired, it was agreed that a review would take place after the second season.
That means if he failed to make the UCL in year one — he wouldn’t be sacked because the club wanted to give him time to build and prove himself. This was supposed to be a long-term project after all.
For the exact same reason, if he hit his targets — such as making the UCL and winning the Club World Cup — he also wouldn’t immediately get a massive pay rise before that review. The club wanted to see whether it was sustainable before handing the third highest paid coach in the league an even bigger contract.
Again — long-term project. What’s the rush?
As for the sporting directors getting pay rises — they had already been here close to three years at that point, so it’s not really a comparable situation whether people agree with it or not.
The reality is that Maresca’s ego got inflated by a bit of success and interest from other clubs. He tried to use that leverage to force Chelsea into giving him a huge new deal. The club didn’t want to do that because it wasn’t what had originally been agreed.
He had a meeting with Juve. He had multiple meetings with Man City. That’s complete disrespect towards Chelsea.
Then he eventually decided to leave with essentially no notice — a few days before facing the club he had practically already agreed to join this summer.
There’s plenty of things you can criticise the club for, but standing their ground and refusing to be strong-armed by a Championship coach they gave an opportunity to — and made one of the best paid managers in the entire league — shouldn’t be one of them.
He’s a great coach, but he’s also an unstable personality.
The modern version of Antonio Conte.
🚨❗️ The process is being led by Chelsea’s sporting directors, who will report their findings and recommendations to the owners. [telegraph] https://t.co/FRJWcNWfO4

The current Chelsea first team manager only a few years ago was a football twitter merchant himself. If this doesn't just once again cement how out of depth every single one of these people are, then I don't know what else to say! #BlueCoOut
