IU gave UAENA a lot to talk about in today’s chat, with new details about her full album, promotions, Unknown Planet, the MV and even fan goods.

ALBUM & PROMOTIONS

• Her new full-length album will have at least 12 songs, with more still being considered.
• Songs that don’t make the main tracklist won’t simply disappear. IU said they can still be released in another form.
• The album includes a dance track.
• She plans to appear on as many Korean music shows (음방) as possible.
• As for the English title “Unknown Planet,” IU said its meaning will make sense once the album is released.

MUSIC VIDEO & THE HAIRCUT

• IU cut her hair right on the MV set. After filming the first scene, the final spacesuit scene, she suddenly got the feeling: “Right now!” and cut it.
• Her new bob also comes with one very important advantage: she can wash her hair so quickly that she’s been washing it three times a day.
• Then came the tiniest lyric spoiler possible: “life is…” before IU stopped herself with, “That’s as far as I’ll go.”

FOR UAENA

• Fans asked about the missing keyring, and IU said she’ll include one because she knows how much UAENA love keyrings.
• She also said the cute IU character is coming soon.

It is actually impossible for a star to come extremely close to Earth.

The idea of 2 people 'approaching' or 'coming closer' does not necessarily mean a real physical approach. Instead it could be a shortening of perceived distance caused by an observational error.

Could real love perhaps be interpreted in a similar way?

If we interpret the MV according to the setting of the song, we could simply interpret it as the unrealistic situation of a star actually coming closer.

But if we look at it realistically, we could understand it as a situation where someone who never actually came closer was felt to have come closer, and where one person loved the other alone, or where the two people each loved separately. That, too, could be poignant.

Ultimately, rather than giving one definite conclusion, perhaps both interpretations are possible, and which interpretation we want to choose is up to us.

In the former case, I think it is a situation where they actually come closer, meet, fall in love, and then become distant again.

In the latter case, they never actually became close, but one person loved and longed for the other alone, and then became distant again on their own.

If we use love as the metaphor, I think both interpretations are more than possible."

IU dropped two self-written songs this week and the Korean is doing work that English translations cannot carry. April Kim’s Reel is one of the better public explanations of why.

이 별로부터 looks like “from this planet.” Spoken aloud it is also 이별로부터 — “from a farewell.” Same sound. Two meanings. The whole first track lives inside that pun. You are not just leaving a person. You are leaving the private planet the two of you built and then walking off it.

The song is a list of things that only existed between them: the song that was playing at the first kiss, the nickname only they used, the exact way they used to make up after fights, the streets she ran down to meet them, the future they drew together every day. Then she says she will put all of it down here and leave. Not “I miss you.” Not even “I regret it.” She says she has lingered in that place for a long time, and that “waiting” or “lingering attachment” is too small a word for what that was. In Korean it does not sound bitter. It sounds precise. Almost gentle. Like someone packing a room instead of writing a breakup letter.

Track two is the opposite temperature. Dear My Crazy Soulmate is written to Yoo In-na. You can be weird in front of me for the rest of your life, that’s why I like you more. My dream is we become two strange grandmas together. Even if the world collapses I will still mess around for your sake. Same writer. Completely different kind of love. One song is leaving a planet. The other is promising to stay on it.

This is the part people miss if they only get the English. The plot survives. The architecture does not. IU’s word choices are load-bearing. The homophones are not decoration. The tone sits between diary and poem. People who grew up inside Korean literature still say her lyrics feel like extra homework.

April’s Reel is doing the useful thing: not “here is the translation,” but “here is what the translation cannot hold.” That should be a series.
