@Joanna__Hardy Joanna - I would go so far as to say “always”. I cannot think of any judge for years now giving a rape trial anything other than a fixed date. That is not to say that they do not sometimes get moved for lack of court time, but that is a different problem.
Let there be no doubt: the Criminal Bar Association will oppose to the government's plan to curtail existing rights to trial by jury.
This is the CBA's response to the Courts and Tribunals Bill 2026.
The proposal for Judge-only trials has been mis-sold on the false promise of 'swifter justice for victims.' It does nothing of the kind: the government's own Impact Assessment glosses over the fact that - even on their own figures - it will make a negligible difference to delays in the Crown Court.
Juries matter. 12 people, randomly selected, discussing the evidence together, are the best guarantee of a verdict which is free from bias. The public have confidence in our jury system.
“there is a third group the criminal justice system is designed to serve that’s missing from the government’s analysis: the innocent. For those wrongfully accused by police and prosecutors — and it really could one day be any of us — jury trial is the key step that stands between them and wrongful conviction.” @soniasodha in @thetimes
@MAMBarLife Hmm… I worked for Law Society in about 2002/3 and we used to go to Hodgsons quite a bit! - it was downstairs, next door to Law Soc and I think Chez Gerrard was next along? Corts was further up towards High Holborn, if memory serves…
@Counsel2Council@Defencebrief Agree with this John. I note that offender pleaded guilty and made admissions in interview, according to the police statement. Adding on the third reduction takes it a starting point of 4 years 1 month.
@LeonKazakosKC The other thing that happens is that sometimes statements that were there end up not being there later. The first time that happens you think you’re going mad. The fifth time you realise it definitely isn’t you.
@SouthernRailUK any way of improving RR service? Train late to Three Bridges, so I missed 1255 RR bus to Horsham; now I will miss connecting 1333 train at Horsham for Arun Valley. Will have to wait hour for next train. So frustrating. Is there no way to connect buses w/ trains?
