On this somber 10th anniversary, we pause to remember the Emanuel Nine. Their lives were tragically cut short by an act of racial hatred at their place of worship. Dylann Roof, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, entered the doors of the church during a bible study and opened fire immediately after a word of prayer.

He was sentenced to death on his federal charges on January 10, 2017 and to life in prison without parole on state charges on April 10, 2017. He's currently in federal prison where he continues to appeal his convictions.

In the years following this fateful day, those who lost their lives became known as the "Emanuel Nine."
