"Forrest Gump" (1994) is an allegory of the Baby Boomer generation's remarkable gullibility. Forrest himself repreresents the archetypal Boomer, drifting through a succession of media-propagated narratives, embracing each with unwavering confidence, never troubled by scepticism, never inconvenienced by curiosity. Elvis shaking his pelvis, the polio injection, the assassination of Ku Klux Kennedy, the Vietnam War, AIDS——one lie after another, each accepted with the same unquestioning faith.

The film is a devastating mockery of an entire generation. The audience is coaxed into admiring Forrest, into recognising itself in him, whilst the film quietly says, "This is you", and every tribute paid to his gullibility doubles as a rebuke to those who identify with him.

The Baby Boomer generation is invited to identify itself with an idiot who is distinguished above all by unquestioning belief, and is rewarded so lavishly that the audience never suspects the compliment to be an insult.

The compliment is perfectly courteous; the knife is inserted with the same courtesy.
