@nachtfunke @John_Tax Yep! That’s my starting point for body copy, and then I adjust from there based on the idiosyncrasies of the typeface I’ve chosen. As a rule, sans serifs usually need more leading. Short lines, and anything set large or in all caps, need less. But 1.2 is a solid start. 💪

@nachtfunke @John_Tax For body copy, starting point is 1.2x pt size of type. That’s usually too much for large type like headers. Also, must consider ascenders + descenders, which vary in length from typeface to typeface, and x-height. So it’s always an optical, not mathematical, determination for me.

As a teacher, I always find it amusing that the students who come up with these supposedly ingenious hacks still wind up firmly in the middle of the pack (or worse). It’s almost as if all that “clever” energy would be better applied elsewhere … perhaps to actual work? 😉
