Ademola Lookman Showed Davido and Kemi Badenoch That Wisdom Is Not By Age

Recently, the singer David Adeleke was given a global stage to do whatever he wanted and deliver any message.

Sadly, Mr. Adeleke used the opportunity to speak in an American accent. Not only that, he used that American accent to talk down on Nigeria and tell the world not to invest in Nigeria because, as he put it, Nigeria's "economy is in shambles".

Coincidentally, a month after his faux pas, Kemi Badenoch, probably inspired by Davido, used her British accent to talk down Nigeria, calling us "a very poor country" where the police rob citizens.

But the interesting thing about her own case is that the next day, the BBC featured a panel of Conservative Party big shots, and one of them, Albie Amankona, a party chieftain from Chiswick, who is also a celebrity broadcaster, said, and this is a direct quote:

"If you are a Brexiteer, and you are saying we need to be expanding our global trade beyond the European Union, we want to be looking at emerging markets for growth, don't slag off one of the fastest growing economies in Africa."

Is it not strange that it took the BBC and a British politician to promote Nigeria as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa?

And just when we thought it was all bad news, God gave us a breath of fresh air in the youthful Ademola Lookman, who used the global podium granted to him by his winning the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award to promote and project Nigeria and the Lukumi Yoruba language to the world.

Wisdom is not by age. If not, Ademola Lookman, who is just twenty-seven, will not have displayed greater wisdom than David Adeleke, who is thirty-two, and Kemi Badenoch, at forty-four.

Mr. Lookman proved that the age of Methuselah has nothing to do with the wisdom of Solomon.

And it is not as though other ethnicities with global icons do not also project Nigeria. They do.

Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala spoke Igbo on the podium of the WTO in Geneva. In terms of prestige, she is FAR above Lookman.

My campaign is not for the Lukumi Yoruba alone. It is for all sub-Saharan Black Africans to learn to speak their language and not use ability to speak English or another colonial language as a measure of intelligence.

Besides Lukumi Yoruba and Hausa, every other Nigerian language, including Fulfulde, is gradually dying out.

General Buhari is half Fulani and half Kanuri. Yet, he cannot speak either Fuifulde or Kanuri. But he speaks Hausa and English.

Fact-check me: In 2012, UNESCO declared Igbo an endangered language.

However, the Lukumi Yoruba are to be commended for their affirmative actions to advance their language and culture.

Let me give you an example. All six Governors of the Southwest bear full Lukumi names: Jide Sanwa-Olu, Seyi Makinde, Dapo Abiodun, Ademola Adeleke, Abiodun Oyebanji, and Orighomisan Aiyedatiwa.

No other zone in Nigeria has all its governors bearing ethnic Nigerian names as first and second names. They either bear Arabic or European names as first names or even first and second names.

If we truly want to be the Giant of Africa, we must take affirmative steps to preserve our language and culture so we can have children like Ademola Lookman.

Teach your language to your children before you teach them English. They will learn English at school. Being multilingual is scientifically proven to boost intelligence.

Fact-check me: In the U.S., Latino kids do not speak English until they start school. They learn Spanish as a first language.

Even if you relocate to the UK, the best you can be is British. You can never be English. And if your choice of Japa is the U.S., the highest you can be is an American citizen. You will never become a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant WASP.

Your power lies in balancing ancient and modern, Western and African, English (or other colonial languages) and your native tongue.

That is the way to reverse language erosion, like the Lukumi Yoruba.

While the behaviour of their kinsmen cost some Presidential candidates massive votes, President Tinubu got significant votes outside his region, not just because of his campaigns, but because of how his kith behaved. Their behaviour endeared their kinsman to other Nigerians and reassured them they would be safe under his leadership.

Although I have always admired the Yoruba, however, the last campaign season deepened that love and respect. When I criticised Tinubu, you observe their responses. ‘Sir, it is not true’. ‘Egbon, I won’t agree’. ‘E sir, please don’t talk like that’. No insults, abuses, or threats. Even when they politically disagree with you, the Yoruba will still kill you with respect. Why won’t you love them?

Such a cultured and refined people. A reflection of class and breeding. They stooped to conquer. Even when they disagree, by and large, they agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

And that stopping to conquer is powerful. As any good Muslim knows, the best time to pray is when you are bent down with your head touching the ground in submission and supplication to God. Why? Because they believe shaytan will never stoop, and because of that pride, at the moment of stopping, he and his agents cannot eavesdrop on your prayers.

If everybody in Nigeria could imbibe the respect and live and let live philosophy of the Yoruba, Nigeria would be a paradise! If you want to argue, compare the peace and prosperity in your region to that of the Southwest. Case closed.

And that is why they day, I want to thank and pray for the offspring of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. My prayers cannot do anything for the late sage. He is dead, and he is dead. Prayers can't affect him. But for his offspring, may God bless you and may you reap the good rewards of having an ancestor whose character, competence and courage helped shape an entire ethnic nationality to become beacons of hope to the rest of humanity. If IPOBy @Ezekwesili is really concerned about the commercial interests of the Igbos, as she claims, how come she has NEVER one day condemned the Monday sit-at-home throughout the Southeast that is crippling the Region commercially? But it is Lagos she wants to accuse of being against Igbos. A state where all of our Igbo brothers, sisters and children can go to jobs, businesses, schools, or any other lawful activity on Monday and every day of the week.

Hurricane Tinubu strikes again. In one fell swoop, he has demonstrated that he is the Commander-in-Chief. This is the type of courage that has been missing in Aso Rock. Now our military and security services will sit up. What a man! Talk about hitting the ground running. No ambiguity about who is in charge. In three weeks, he has consigned Buhari's eight years into the dustbin of history. Well done! Bravo. No matter your shortcomings (and you do have them), no objective observer can deny that you have exceeded everybody's expectations. The only thing I will appeal to the President to do is to find a way to reflect the Southeast commensurately to their population, and not according to the votes they gave him, in his security architecture and government. Inclusion will reduce agitation. That aside, let me add that this is the leadership that Awolowo would have given if Nigeria had given him the chance. I doff my heart to the President. But my support is still for Waziri Atiku!

No matter what you say about Bola Tinubu, you must admit that he promised to

•Get rid of fuel subsidy
•Revisit Naira redesign
•Assist indigent student
•Open up Nigeria to foreign direct investment
•Be an accessible President, and
•Work for a private sector led economy

As repulsive as I find some part of his past, I must say that the man has fulfilled and is fulfilling these promises in just two weeks. I am convinced that Waziri Atiku would have been better, and I pray for our petition at the PEPC to succeed. Nevertheless, let me add that If President Tinubu continues like this, there is no way that Nigeria will not reclaim her rightful position as the Giant of Africa.
