A reminder to Manchester United fans who seem to have forgotten.
In 2006, United were trying to climb back to the top after Chelsea had won back-to-back league titles under Mourinho. The club was rebuilding, Arsenal’s Invincibles era was still fresh in people’s minds, and many questioned whether Ferguson could build another great side.
Then there was Ronaldo.
After the World Cup incident involving Rooney, he came back to England as public enemy number one. He was booed relentlessly, abused at away grounds and treated like a villain wherever he went.
Most players would have folded under that pressure.
Instead, he produced one of the greatest individual rises the Premier League has ever seen.
From the opening day demolition of Fulham, he was electric. He became the driving force behind United’s resurgence, helping deliver three consecutive Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Club World Cup and eventually a Ballon d’Or.
He wasn’t just another great player in that team. He was the difference-maker. The player opponents feared most. The player who turned matches that were drifting away. The player who made the impossible look routine.
Between 2006 and 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo was the face of Manchester United’s return to dominance. I genuinely believe that without him, that era does not look the same.
Which is why watching some United fans abuse and hound him today in defence of Bruno Fernandes is beyond madness. Whatever anyone thinks of Bruno, comparing their Manchester United legacies is not a serious discussion. One player was the driving force behind one of the most dominant periods in the club’s modern history. The other has captained teams that have won no major league titles, lost two Europa League finals, and overseen some of the club’s worst league finishes in the Premier League era.
You can admire Bruno. You can support him. But using him as a reason to diminish Cristiano Ronaldo’s contribution to Manchester United is football amnesia of the highest order.
Nothing will ever make me forget what Cristiano Ronaldo did for Manchester United.
