African leaders are avoiding the core issue on illegal immigration in SA because confronting it means confronting their own governance failures and complicity.
i am so bored by the idea that caring about asylum seekers or opposing xenophobia is somehow a symptom of being “out of touch” because you’re middle class. compassion isn’t a class position, and human rights aren’t a luxury belief.
A Tsonga family in Germiston was harassed at their home by the mob who demanded to see their ID documents before looting the house and taking all of their belongings. One woman was bathing when they dragged her out of the bathroom naked.
As a child I would read about the holocaust and Rwanda couldn’t imagine seeing such hate in contemporary world. As an adult it’s clear that many of our fellow human beings are capable or very deep cruelty. Xenophobia might be strongest online.
To my African brothers and sisters please keep safe 🙏🏾 Remember that many of us South Africans do not align ourselves with what is currently happening. Ours is the freedom of all Africans from Neo-colonialism and imperialism.
Aluta Continua ✊🏿
