@EliotJacobson The 2020’s still have 6 years to go. Individual years will definitely hit 17c within those years. The decade average it will establish itself around 2033-5
Our entire civilisation is run by people who do not accept the science of climate change. There's just too much money involved in the fossil fuel economy for them to face reality. They are now digging in and they have nearly all the power and all the media. Meanwhile, regardless of what anyone thinks, the planet is overheating and beginning to breakdown. There's a tectonic clash developing between the world's dominant ideology and its actual physical reality.
The mass extinction has already well and truly started in Australia. Because apparently Koalas, platypus and the worlds largest, most diverse and important coral reef system aren't as important as fossil fuel profits
THE MASS DEATH PROJECT
First they killed the insects, but they were not me
Then they killed the birds, but they were not me
Then they killed the cows, but they were not me
Then they killed the wheat, but they were not me
Then there was no food in the supermarket and my children died, but they were not me
Then I .... You care, so ACT.
"Many experts believe we may soon face a mass extinction event, with a high proportion of Earth’s species dying out." Prof Erin Saupe, Univ. of Oxford.

So Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek thinks UNESCO deciding to not list the Great Barrier Reef as “in Danger” is a win. The fact is ACTUALLY DYING is apparently irrelevant
Your 'moment of doom' for June 26, 2024 ~ The future is now.
"At least 97% of corals on a reef in the Great Barrier Reef’s north died during one of the worst coral bleaching events the world’s biggest reef system has ever seen..."

A wax sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in Northwest DC has melted due to the heat....🥵
Before and after.....
Quote from the artist Sandy Williams to the Intelligencer....
"I previously had joked that when our climate gets bad enough to where we are living in an environment where the ambient heat melts these sculptures, that’s when this work becomes an environmental artwork. I didn’t know that was going to be this summer."
the way I see it at this point is, we essentially change everything or we essentially lose everything. because of the decades of delay. if you don’t agree with me yet you will when things get even hotter
12 per cent of the population of Phoenix, Arizona will die of extreme heat in the 2030s.
So let's get to work on this one.
654 people died from extreme heat in 2023. Pretty bad. But that's not the stat to look at. It is the fact that death levels went up a whopping 700% in a decade.
So get the calculator out - that's 4,500 dying a year in 2033 and 31,000 dying each year by 2034. Depending on how you do the maths, you can predict 180,000 deaths during the 2030s - ie., 12% of the population dies from heat during that decade.
There are two take aways here -
1. The maths does not lie - Phoenix will experience social collapse at some point in the 2030s, along with the rest of the world's cities in the new death zones of the planet.
2. People will not believe this because they do not get exponential growth.
Of course you could say that this is an exaggeration because the government will respond with adaptation measures. The answer to this is: yes and no. One of the key factors here is how bad things get. Paradoxically, the worse the situation, the more the government will double down on denial and do nothing. While where the situation is 'not so bad', then adaptation measures will be brought in.
Read the article and note that protection for outdoor workers is being brought in in the northern states but is blocked in the more vulnerable states.
Why is this? Because fascistic tendency hates life and would rather idealise death. If you have a better explanation, then please let us know.
Think about why people smoke. And then think about it seriously.
The real question for humankind over the next decade is: do we want to live or die? And more profoundly, do we want to love life or hate it?
It's not clear at the moment what the answer will be.

What a surprise! In a article for the New York Times, @jeffgoodell predicts 13,000 deaths in Phoenix in a heatwave + blackout scenario (and 800,000 hospitalised).
A climate scientist called me "dumb" last week for my 1.6 million viewed tweet that 12% of Phoenix would die of extreme heat in the 2030s due to the exponential increase in temperatures. In amongst the torrent of abusive comments from inhabitants of the great American nation, one lone voice stood out. It pointed out that obviously, my prediction was an underestimate because, as I keep reminding those willing to understand basic human biology - human bodies die en mass at a certain tipping point temperature called the wet bulb effect - the nuclear moment of the 21st century.
What the NYT article implies but does not make explicit is what happens when a blackout occurs whilst the temperature rises above the prediction of 90-113F. At this temperature range "in Phoenix, about 800,000 people — roughly half the population — would need emergency medical treatment for heat stroke and other illnesses. The flood of people seeking care would overwhelm the city’s hospitals. More than 13,000 people would die."
So, obviously at somewhere between 113C and say 133C, depending on the humidity, effectively all those 800,000 people will die (technically in 6 hours) to say nothing of all deaths due to the secondary social effects of riots, overwhelmed hospitals, and roaming death-loving fascists - the long thick tail of mass trauma raging through time and space.
Get it yet? The point is not whether things are exactly going to pan out like this or not in Phoenix (and in 1000 other cities around the world). The point is that risking it by allowing your government to roll the dice on more emissions is the greatest act of total fucking stupidity in the infinity of the universe.
Because remember - all this shit, once it starts, never stops.
Self-respect demands resistance.
@JMooreP3@ClimateDad77 Which coral reefs are adapting? I live in Australia with the largest and most important reefs in the world, and the coral reefs are dying
@PaulRThorogood @ClimateDad77 The top end of rich countries maybe. Here in Australia, the worlds biggest coal and gas miners are getting
more subsidies off the government not less, and I’m growing potatoes and beans to eat next year
@dominic_dice@ClimateDad77 Buried is a strong word, the trend year over year was getting hotter, and yes James Hansen has said that removing aerosols from emissions has meant more energy has entered the atmosphere
@PaulRThorogood @ClimateDad77 And trust me the farmers here are all talking about “being sustainable” while just doing the same old shite they have been doing for the last 100 years
@PaulRThorogood @ClimateDad77 Buddy, what’s this “end of the century” and “next century” stuff? Countries like Australia with large deserts are going to have food collapse in the next 20 years
Tom Cruise gets followed around by a guy with a space heater-(226 kg of emissions yearly). The complete madness of a society that allows the 0.1% to just piss carbon into the atmosphere so they don't have to wear a bloody coat. This sh!t has to stop if civilization has any chance
@TheCryptoLark If the US government collapses and the USD is worthless, #bitcoin being worth $100000 will be irrelevant.
#ClimateChange is coming for us all, you can’t out trade physics
