The Red Bull leadership is said to be extremely annoyed with Max Verstappen, who has once again put Red Bull in the waiting room. According to De Limburger, the shareholders had hoped for more loyalty from the Dutchman, but they are still waiting for his definite "yes".

Verstappen’s multi-year deal with a catch

For the third year in a row, it’s the same story: in June and July, Max Verstappen is the main topic of conversation. Despite a contract until 2028, Red Bull has had to wait until at least the summer break for three consecutive years to know whether Verstappen will really stay at Red Bull Racing. Thanks to various clauses in the Dutchman’s contract, he has been able to come close to leaving several times — despite an ongoing deal.
In 2024 and 2025, Verstappen held talks with teams including Mercedes, but a move never materialised. Primarily because the clauses couldn’t be activated in those seasons, and secondly because Verstappen ultimately decided that Red Bull was still the best place for him. In both cases, it seems that something has changed in 2026.

Verstappen can leave Red Bull

First of all, Verstappen can activate his clause for the first time. After the dramatic end to the British Grand Prix, Verstappen can no longer officially finish in the top two in the world championship during the summer break. This would allow him to activate the clause and leave Red Bull. Contractually, he only has to inform Red Bull about this in October.
And that’s where the friction currently lies. In recent seasons, Red Bull has done a lot — if not everything — to keep Verstappen on board. It was known that 2026 would be a transitional year with the new engine regulations, and Red Bull has delivered. The combustion engine was immediately competitive, only the electric part of the power unit and especially the car designed by Pierre Waché fell short. Still, the technical team of the Frenchman has worked hard to make Red Bull competitive again.

According to De Limburger, this has caused the top of Red Bull to be extremely annoyed that Verstappen is once again putting them in the waiting room. The shareholders had expected more loyalty from Verstappen after all these years. In their eyes, the Limburger has already been able to deposit hundreds of millions into his bank account, and they believe Verstappen should show a bit of gratitude for that.

Verstappen is considering leaving Formula 1

There is, however, also something to be said for Verstappen’s side. Those clauses are in his contract after all — signed by Dietrich Mateschitz and Helmut Marko at the beginning of 2022. Verstappen doesn’t want to be bought out of them easily, as it would also make him less flexible. He first wants to see that Red Bull can really catch up before he fully commits to them.

According to the same newspaper, there are also question marks about the motorsport knowledge within Red Bull Racing. After the rounds of dismissals, little of it is said to remain. The people who were let go have mainly been replaced by people from Red Bull’s football branch. The only one with motorsport expertise is said to be Laurent Mekies, and it is questionable whether that is enough for Verstappen to commit to the future.
The coming weeks will make it clear where Verstappen’s future lies. He still has until October to inform Red Bull of his decision, but if he wants to move to another team, things may need to move faster. Given the current tensions, the same newspaper reports that it is no longer ruled out that the Limburger, after twelve years with Red Bull, is ready for something else. Even an early exit from Formula 1 or a sabbatical year are now serious options.
