LEM, X-ray Astrophysics mission concept, transforms our understanding of galaxies, black holes, stars, and planets, capitalizing on the newest technologies.
NASA announced the results of Step 1 of the Astrophysics Probe competition. Unfortunately @LEMXray was not selected. We want to thank our amazing Team of 300+ scientists, engineers, and program managers, administrators, who dedicated 2 years to developing the LEM concept! (1/2)
But do not worry, LEM is not going away! The massive progress that the Team made developing the scientific ideas and mission concept will carry on. You will be hearing from us!
In the meantime, @LEMXray will be cheering on Team @AXISprobe in Step 2! Go X-rays!! (2/2)

As we scan through the simulated bubble, the line profile on the right varies, revealing its complex velocity structure! A notable ‘double-horn feature emerges at the bubble’s center, caused by the opposing expansion of its near and far sides. ⬅️➡️ (2/2)
Need an example of the @LEMXray amazing capabilities? The X-ray tomography of @eROSITA_SRG bubbles! The left map shows an iron (FeXVII) line emission bubble in a #MilkyWay -like galaxy from the TNG50 simulation, resembling observed eROSITA bubbles. (1/2)
Greetings from the eROSITA first results conference, where many amazing results on the #circumgalacticmedium – obtained thanks to @eROSITA_SRG – were presented! Francois Mernier also showed how @LEMXray will push our understanding of this key science to the next level! 🚀
Greetings from the Applied Superconductivity Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah! In his invited talk, Nick Wakeham (NASA GSFC/UMBC) showed how NASA’s #microcalorimeter designs are being optimized to achieve the exquisite measurements of X-ray photon energy needed for @LEMXray. 🔬
This is nicely demonstrated on the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (based on models coming from state-to-the-art simulations) by S. Orlando et al. in this new @LEMXray White Paper. (6/6)

Today is #LEMpaper day! 📰 We are are proud to highlight a new White Paper on the @LEMXray observation of the core-collapse supernova remnant Cassiopeia A, by S. Orlando et al. (2024). A thread ⬇️ (1/6)
With its unprecedented X-ray spectral resolution, this is exactly what @LEMXray will do! Cherry on the cake 🍰: LEM has a large field of view, allowing to capture even the closest #supernova remnants in their entirety! 🔭 (5/6)
Read about all these examples and more @LEMXray AGN science in "Active Galaxy Science with the Line Emission Mapper: The Case for High-Resolution Soft X-ray Spectroscopy" by Weaver et al.! 📰 (5/5)

Today is #LEMpaper day! #SupermassiveBlackHoles 🕳️ and @LEMXray 🛰️? Yes! LEM is a powerful telescope that will unveil many mysteries about virtually all aspects of Active Galactic Nuclei #AGN, which is outlined in the new white paper by Weaver et al.! A thread ⬇️ (1/5)
But how do supermassive black holes evolve? 📈 What about #AGN at high redshift? The unmatched spectral resolution of @LEMXray makes them very easy to catch via their Fe-K emission line! (4/5)
Are those still #July4th fireworks? Or is this @LEMXray microcalorimeter array prototype? 👀🤩🎇 With its 14,000 pixels LEM camera is an amazing detector that provides both images and spectra in each pixel, unveiling many outstanding Universe mysteries!
Today, John ZuHone @astrojaz, a member of @LEMXray scientific leadership, shared results from Zhang+2024 which show how LEM will finally unveil gas motions in the galaxy cluster outskirts that imprint the history of the large scale structure formation!
.@LEMXray is clearly needed to solve problems discussed at the 7th Intracluster Medium Theory and Computation Workshop this week in Ann Arbor! Today, LEM's Asst DPI @_annaogorzalek discussed LEM's power for mapping hot gas dynamics in massive elliptical #galaxies
Then Nhut Truong, co-chair of @LEMXray CGM Working Group, showed that X-ray future is microcalorimeter-bright and how LEM's first eV-scale all-sky survey will unveil the mysteries of the #eROSITAbubbles ! 🤩
