That was not a joke. It was sexual innuendo directed at a 15 year old girl by Karen Nyamu, a sitting Senator of the Republic of Kenya, and a mother of daughters herself.
What makes it even more disturbing is the lack of remorse. The apology was clearly reluctant and only came after sustained pressure from fellow Senators and public outrage. But she kept protesting even as she read it.
Such remarks have no place anywhere, let alone on the floor of the Senate. It is deeply unfortunate that this came from someone seeking to represent the women of Nairobi in a leadership position where she would be expected to champion the rights, dignity and protection of women and vulnerable girls.
Public office demands responsibility, maturity and appreciation of the influence leaders hold in society.
The Senate from its origins in Ancient Rome was conceived as a chamber of statesmanship, wisdom and dignity. A house where those entrusted with public responsibility would rise above vulgarity and uphold the moral seriousness of leadership.

I still wonder why they transferred me from Thika Prison to Ruiru and forced me to wear “Kunguru.”
I had previously worked in Ruiru. This second photo was taken in the same area within Ruiru Prison the time I was working there.
They denied me phone calls for several days. Their stated reason for the transfer was “security reasons.”
In Ruiru, I met inmates whom I had once guarded, both in Kamiti and Ruiru.
My question is, why would they send me there? Was it safe for me?
Did they want me to be harmed or even killed?
The news of Gospel Musician Betty Bayo's passing on is truly heartbreaking and devastating to me and the whole nation.
Her remarkable talent and contribution through beutifully crafted lyrics and charity work touched many souls and transformed lives.
I join our fellow countrymen and women, as well as the entire creative industry, in mourning the loss of a legend.
My heart goes out to her family during this difficult time; please accept my deepest condolences.
May the Almighty God grant you strength in this challenging moment, and may Betty Bayo’s soul rest in eternal peace.
The NCIC must wake up. Kenyans are sick of leaders who use funerals to spread hate. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s words were disgraceful, reckless, and dangerous. He must be face the law.
