@campbellclaret Thanks for raising awareness of this Alastair. It's endlessly frustrating that musicians had our right to seek work abroad severely curtailed by Brexit, and are now, with ACE cuts and this, having our livelihoods destroyed in the UK. What are we meant to do?

Listen, I know the powers that be in this country are not out to make my life, specifically, harder...but some days it really feels like it.

Remove my ability to travel and work freely in other countries, then axe funding for my work in the UK.

@Flissish True but I'm not convinced this new method is better. Panels claim they can spot editing, but well-done editing they really can't so it comes down to how much you can afford to spend to make it top tier. Plus being able to apply at all now has a large financial barrier.

Does anyone else think that the pandemic opened a terrible watershed in programmes asking for video first round applications? Its so expensive as a young singer to make recordings every 3 months that fulfil rep requirements for everything you might apply for.

Is it really necessary? How did we cope before? I know some programmes still wanted recordings but most didnt. The financial barriers post-covid make it so much harder for young singers to break into the industry

Recording equipment: big initial outlay for decent camera and 2 mics to capture sound adequately.
Venue hire.
Accompanist pay for rehearsal and recording session.
If you want competitive recording quality, really you need a videographer for £400 a session.

Heartbreaking news about the fire at St Marks Hamilton Terrace, the church where I sing in the choir. It's horrible seeing the photos of it burning and empty, so here are some photos of it and its congregation full of life - the way I know it.

We are heartbroken. St Mark’s has been a beacon of hope & light in a dark world for 175 years. As a church, we have worshipped together and loved our community - seeking to serve the parish. This will not stop. We don’t yet know the full extent of the damage, but we will rebuild.

@edjmckeon @jjohnstonmezzo Of course there are compelling arguments to be made about the importance of the arts to our soft power, to society's soul, I'm the last person to dispute that. But considering the arts is the same chunk of GDP as financial services, the economic arguments are compelling!

@edjmckeon @jjohnstonmezzo - every £ generated in the arts generates a further £2.26 in the rest of the economy
- every £ of public subsidy to the arts generates £5 in tax revenue.

These figures are for arts specifically, not the culture sector as a whole.
