So, today marks the end of a particular journey I began about two years ago. I had abandoned this for so long that it came as a pleasant surprise, albeit a bit scary, when my supervisor, @hugoleijtens, asked me to go through the course and complete it.

So I bought something at a 7-Eleven in Nagoya. The cashier was this high school kid, looked nervous, definitely new.
He rang everything up but forgot to ask if I wanted a bag. His manager (I assume) saw this and started correcting him in Japanese. The kid's face went red, he apologized to me like five times.
The manager kept talking to him, not mean but like... teaching. The kid nodded, said "hai" a bunch of times.
When the transaction finished, I took my stuff. But the kid had accidentally given me the wrong change - ¥500 more than he should have.
I could've just left. He wouldn't have noticed until counting the register later. Would've been in trouble.
I went back and told him. His face went from embarrassed to grateful in like two seconds. He bowed so deeply I thought he was going to hit his head on the counter.
He fixed it, and gave me the right change. As I was leaving, I heard the manager say something to him in Japanese. The kid looked over at me and smiled.
A customer behind me in line said in English "the manager told him 'see? Honest people still exist. That's why we stay honest too.'"
I think about that sometimes. How we teach each other what kind of world we want to live in, even in tiny moments.
A Very Nigerian Problem We Need To Talk About
I was on a vetting task last week to verify the certificate of a graduate currently undergoing military training.
Simple task, right? Just confirm if the person truly graduated.
We linked up with the Library Lovers and you just know it was a blast!
Were you there?

It’s so hard explaining to people who don’t have depression that nothing “bad” has to actually happen to trigger it. You will literally just wake up some days and feel absolutely worthless and hopeless. It literally just happens.
The world is getting ready to hold its breath as we get into the search for the new world champion
Who are you predicting to bring the trophy home ?

When someone dies by suicide, people ask:
Why didn’t they talk to someone?
What were they thinking?
How could they do that?
But when someone tries to open up, the world often says:
You’re overreacting.
You’ll be fine.
You’re too sensitive.
That’s life get on with it.
Silencing people in pain and then judging their silence is one of the cruellest things we do as a society.
