The majority stand with our Irish team.
@IrelandFootball — play the game.
This is football. Not a referendum. Not a slogan. Not someone else’s ideology deciding who we are.
Our lads pulled on the green jersey to represent Ireland, not to become a political chess piece. Let them do what they were born to do: compete, fight, and make us proud.
If we let every cause, every campaign, and every fashionable outrage dictate who we play, we lose more than a match. We lose the simple, stubborn thing that has always bound this country together. 🇮🇪
Back the team. Play the game.
#PlayTheGame
I want them to play. Certainly won’t hate them. I love the Irish football team. Always have, always will
The only thing I hate is this vile campaign against our players which shows you how low these people will go for their own agenda and more importantly the way the Irish MSM have conducted themselves throughout all of this.
To pick on our players and expect them to make this call is the worse case of bullying you could imagine. These people have showed themselves for what they truly are
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and views but what’s been said about our players if they play is completely unacceptable. They have been put in a very unfair position throughout all of this
Keep politics out of sport, music and everything else where politics should not be
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City found guilty on virtually all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations. #MCFC expected to appeal against verdict issued by independent commission. Sanctions undecided, process ongoing @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/Muxqp4beK9
Oh totally, a random game of football far outweighs the famine, the blood spilled by Cromwell, bloody Sunday, the brutal murder of Ashling Murphy, child stabbings, gay men being beheaded and 10 year-olds being raped.
The Paddystinian movement is a dangerously stupid, murderous, death cult!
We’re a nation of bullies.
I do not say this lightly.
I see it every day, and though it’s amplified on social media, it extends to real life, especially towards people who are successful. This small-minded, begrudging mindset is entrenched in the Irish psyche, often seen in the #BeKind brigade: “kind” until you go against the “accepted” narrative, and then we’re a cold, callous nation.
This has become even clearer in recently.
People are not only fundamentally incapable of hearing a perspective that may differ from their own, but even if you agree with the sentiment of something, if you do not express that opinion in exactly the way the vocal mob has decided is correct.
Then you’re already guilty by proxy.
Over the last few days, I’ve witnessed a coordinated “campaign” from a vocal section of society attempting to slander, humiliate and intimidate every Irish footballer for their perceived “role” in Ireland’s upcoming controversial Nations League tie with Israel this coming Sunday.
I’m acutely aware of the questionable ethics involved. Human suffering of any description is deplorable; this is not a political point.
But the heinous abuse the players and staff are receiving for something beyond their control is reprehensible. They’re footballers; it’s not on them to uphold the conscience of the nation. To look down on their values when you’re not in their shoes is ignorant.
I believe in the power of on-the-field action and protest, and time will tell what the players decide to do on Sunday. The home game at the Aviva being moved is a missed opportunity that says a lot about us. Israel have played 14 away games since October 2023; only one (Belgium, 2024) was moved for safety.
The athlete petition to #StopTheGame, though well intended, is loaded with irony. Many of the athletes in question have competed or managed at the same events, or even against the nation in question, or against others where similar themes could be observed.
We want players to be the nation’s moral compass, then tear them apart when they don’t act exactly how we want. Behind every jersey is a person. Their mental health matters. Compassion that picks and chooses isn’t compassion.
The only people that have put the players in this position is virtue signaling morons like you.
Where was all your rage when we’ve played other nations in other sports with similar situations.
Our boys in green play football. They are not to be used as political pawns in whatever game of chess you lads are trying to play.
You are a disgrace for what you are doing. It is not fair on our players how you are using them
If you lads put half the effort trying to solve problems for the people of Ireland that you put into Palestine, you would romp home in the next general election instead of sitting on a useless 2% approval rate
Do I need to remind you that you removed the trans flag from your bio when you set sail to try and get into Gaza? It’s because you know exactly what the people of Gaza would do to you if they saw you supported trans people. You’ve been found out Paul
You are full of shit
Irish politicians didn't want the figures released. Now we have them.
