Recent events have shown us just how quickly space #debris can worsen. Back on ground (unfortunately!), we're working through all the data we got from the flight, refining our de-orbit solutions โ๏ธ Getting to relive the amazing experience ๐ฟ๏ธ
๐ฐSpace #debris, has become a critical threat to future and ongoing missions. Team LEOniDAS is a team working on one of the solutions: lightweight, small, cost-effective drag sails deployed at end of a mission, thus ensuring a faster #deorbitation of the spacecraft.ย ย #ESA
Today Jacob and Hannah took over the @Space4Climate stand at @COP26 ๐๐ฐ
If youโre at #COP26 today, come along to The Planetarium in the Green Zone to learn about how space is used to tackle climate issues๐๐
Today the #FlyYourThesis teams @leonidasfyt, DZH Dynamics and ZEUS took to the skies for their first parabolic flight of three! Today we focus on @cranfielduni 's @leonidasfyt team. Their wonderful technology deploys sails of different lengths and geometries
The drag sails are ready for microgravity testing! ๐โ๏ธโป๏ธ
After one exhausting week of assembly, testing and pre-flight checks, our drag sail technology demonstrator is fully operational and integrated on the A310-AirZeroG aircraft. Experiment is good to go!
Tomorrow, at Novespace facilities in Bordeaux, the first of a series of three parabolic flight will take place. Our data will be used to qualify the designs and help to develop the next family of drag sails for a sustainable space environment.
Will keep you updated - stay tuned!
Wow! Look at some of the great designs are Engineers in Year 5 have come up with. With these we really could clean up space!
Well done everyone and good luck to those entering the competition! @ElmridgeScience@UKSEDS
Still lots of time to enter our Leo Competition! KS2, ages 7-12, are eligible to enter ๐จ Submit pictures of how you think we should clean up space, winning prize is your own custom flying squirrel teddy! Entries close on the 8th October 2021; https://t.co/lCcgn0qVqW ๐ฐ
The clock is ticking and our team is fully focused on Assembling, Integrating and Testing our experiment. The AIT phase represent a critical step in the development of an experiment, since all the requirements must be checked and verified. Remember: Safety First!
Leo being a diligent supervisor as per usual! ๐ฟ๏ธ Determined not to just *wing it*, Leo's been helping us stay on track! We're hoping to *glide* through our safety review at the end of the month, which *en-tails* ensuring our experiment won't be a hazard to anyone on the flight โ๏ธ
