مفارقة التمهيد الذاتي هي مفارقة تتعلق بالسفر عبر الزمن، حيث يوجد شيء (معلومة، أو غرض، أو فكرة) بلا نقطة منشأ حقيقية، لأنه ينتقل في حلقة زمنية مغلقة

بمعنى آخر النتيجة تصبح سببًا لنفسها، مثال بسيط تخيل أن شخصًا في عام 2050 يعود إلى عام 2025 ويعطي عالمًا مخططات آلة الزمن ويستخدم العالم تلك المخططات لبناء أول آلة زمن، وبعد 25 عامًا يسافر بها إلى الماضي ليسلم المخططات لنفسه

السؤال هنا من الذي اخترع آلة الزمن أصلًا؟ لا أحد….فالمخططات لم تُبتكر في أي لحظة بل ظلت تدور في حلقة زمنية لا بداية لها ولا نهاية وهذا هو جوهر مفارقة

أشهر الأمثلة في السينما
فلم predestination يعد من أوضح الأمثلة على هذه المفارقة حيث تصبح شخصية ما سببًا لوجود نفسها

فلم interstellar بعض أحداثه تعتمد على معلومات تنتقل عبر الزمن بطريقة تشبه مفارقة Bootstrap

مسلسل dark يستخدم المفارقة بشكل متكرر، سواء مع الشخصيات أو الأشياء أو المعلومات

فلم Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban يحتوي على حلقة زمنية تجعل بعض الأحداث سببًا لنفسها

"إذا كان الشيء جاء من المستقبل إلى الماضي، ثم عاد إلى المستقبل دون أن يبتكره أحد، فمن أين أتى أصلًا؟"
