In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸
@katienotopoulos@maura thank you for the incredibly vindicating reporting on this issue, which has also caused me to DM my friend’s little sister a video of a dog having an unspeakable bowel movement at the vet
We are proud and grateful to have almost 103-year-old Eugeniusz Jan Niedzielski, the last surviving soldier of Gen. Stanisław Maczek’s 1st Polish Armoured Division, living in London.
Gen. Maczek and his soldiers never lost a single battle. They sealed the Falaise Pocket on 21 August 1944, liberated Breda and the POW camp in Oberlangen, and ended the war by capturing the Kriegsmarine naval base in Wilhelmshaven.
The current administration *arrests* individuals on Trumped-up charges (pun unintended) to cover up slipshod no-bid contract construction that lead to a dilapidated Reflecting Pool filled with algae and peeling paint — and the response is “who fucking cares?”
If indeed, this is not in the top 100 Trump corruption scandals, consider perhaps the reason is because too many contemporary media and cultural critics have just adopted this same “who fucking cares” attitude to the previous 100 scandals.
Warren Buffett: “My dad was always very forgiving of my misbehavior. He'd just say, 'I know you can do better.'
That was very powerful stuff…because I could do better. I knew it and he knew it. It's nice to have somebody have faith in you.”
‼️🚨🇺🇲🇮🇷 So Iran will again have huge amounts of money, while at the same time, Iran retains enriched uranium, uranium enrichment capability, 70% rockets, drones, and launch systems, and most importantly, the regime remains.
P.S. The situation of Israel is both interesting and humiliating, as Trump likely forbade any action on Lebanon, but Israel will probably break this condition and continue strikes on Hezbollah, though without Trump's support and direct intervention.
"An agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran has been reached.
Congratulations to everyone! With this, I fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and simultaneously allow the immediate lifting of the United States naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" - declares US President Donald Trump
Trump's constant crowing about election "rigging" is his "Big Lie". He says he doesn't need proof...he can just see it. Now he "sees" it in California."Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". And we've seen none. It's conspiracy theory stuff.
Things most Americans agree on:
Groceries cost too much.
Tariffs suck and make no sense.
Congress and Presidents shouldn’t trade stocks.
The debt is a mess.
The border should be secure, but legal immigration is good.
Endless wars are stupid, especially ones that nobody wants and have never been explained.
Americans are exhausted.
AI is like my new best friend that also might be trying to take my job, my ability to think for myself, and my humanity in the process. Yo like I love you, but WTF, but I still love you.
Diversity is actually awesome! The opposite is boring AF.
Canadians are super fucking cool.
Mexicans are chill.
Putin isn’t a good guy looking out for America’s best interest. Rocky IV and Miracle are great movies.
Good neighbors are a blessing.
Freedom of religion and coexistence without having to blow each other up is probably a good idea.
We all question, are we alone in the universe?
We all fuck up along the way.
Epstein didn’t hang himself.
The Trumps and Epstein were best friends for decades. It’s like Bert trying to tell us Ernie was just an acquaintance in the same social scene on Sesame Street back in the day.
The Cowboys suck. Go Birds!
Things we’re told to fight about:
Me.
Laptop.
Vaccines.
Transgenders in sports.
Pronouns.
That’s the joke.
“I have two versions of outlook and neither of them are working” is actually a generational NASA quote now. Not quite One Small Step but every generation lives in a different world
