@BGtheWorld@beecycles It's more complicated than that though. Some OA journals are the most predator and profit-driven. I'd rather support paid-access society journals than MDPI or NatComm
@psmaldino To be honest I'm not sure we need prestige journals at all, but at least CNS don't have a preferential track for science's royalty and one for the plebs. Publication biases are already real enough without it.
@psmaldino I think many profit from the ambiguity, as a large part of the public (including some researchers) isn't aware of PNAS' different tracks and conflates the two types of articles. Publishing two separate journals would be more honest.
@PWGTennant@K_Zucker Agreed, but if both X/N and Y/N are rates independent of N (ie, the amount of chocolate I eat does not depend on the size of my country), I'm not sure why you would expect this association? Confounding is there, but probably due to some unobserved variable
@bmwiernik@multimeric Just evaluate left to right, as is already done with operators with equal precedence? Julia allows exactly this (piping into uncalled (anonymous) functions)
@floryannelli @sofiavanmoorsel I'd say the argument is borderline disingenuous, since it confounds research and teaching positions altogether. Also, how convenient to ignore that it is universities/snsf that control both demand and supply by funding so many phd/postdoc positions and so few permanent ones.
@umairdurrani87 diffeqr, which is on CRAN, is a wrapper around Julia's suite of ODE solvers using JuliaCall. But it requires a Julia installation on the user's machine, so I'd say integration isn't quite as smooth as Rcpp yet. Being able to compile standalone libraries would be a gamechanger
@kjreid95 @D_Researchdson If you're looking for an open source, 1-indexed, modern language, you could also consider Julia. Smaller user base than R but rather similar in syntax and scope to Matlab. And programming in Julia is a joy!
@rlmcelreath Yet there seems to be more than enough plants to sustain more animals. Hairston would say the real limiting factor are carnivores. Or is it plant defenses? ๐
