Quantum computing (QC) is drawing more attention today than generative AI did before ChatGPT launched in November 2022. This should give everyone pause as to what is possible for QC in 2025.

Recent advances, including IBM’s Condor processor, Google’s Willow chip, and NVIDIA’s hybrid quantum-classical computing efforts, suggest QC could achieve practical utility sooner than expected. Likewise, global initiatives like the EU’s Quantum Flagship Program and the U.S. National Quantum Initiative, coupled with private-sector innovations, underscore the accelerating progress. Although logical skepticism remains, the likelihood of an accidental ‘quantum leap’ (pun intended) in QC increases as more minds and resources are dedicated to its research and development.

Just as the introduction of the transformer architecture by Google in 2017 shifted all timeline predictions about LLMs, a QC singularity represents that philosopher’s stone everyone envisions as decades away—until it suddenly hits, changing all predictions drastically. Before transformers were introduced, experts believed generative AI would be achieved in 50 years. Before ChatGPT, experts believed publically available generative AI was decades away. Sora is finally here. OpenAI’s new video generator—capable of working from text, images, and even video—showcases some truly groundbreaking features. In one experiment, starting with just a single image of my CC4 avatar (Sora currently doesn’t accept images of real people, so I had to jump through some hoops with a digital stand-in), the tool generated an impressive 90-degree rotation of my face. The accuracy was remarkable, deftly inferring my profile from a single front-facing portrait of my digital twin.

To create this video, I provided that single image along with the prompt, “Man walking in New York City.”

Here’s what I envision for the future: with a full 360-degree video capture of a real person, Sora or similar models could produce photorealistic video of that individual in virtually any setting. It’s both thrilling and concerning.

As these tools grow more powerful, the call for AI regulation will only intensify. Watermarks, embedded metadata, consent verification, and related measures will become standard practice, ensuring these platforms remain safe environments for both creative experimentation and commercial use.

With Google’s recent end-of-year announcements—Gemini 2.0, Willow, Moohan, AndroidXR, prototype AI glasses, Astra, and Genie 2—that prediction may not hold up.

Giants move slowly. But when they finally do, everything around them either trembles, crumbles, or scrambles to latch on and survive. The decentralized and agile world of information technology allows for frequent, explosive innovation. Yet consumers rarely have the bandwidth or time to learn every new technology that appears. The inertia of brand loyalty and the familiarity of long-established platforms influence which innovations gain traction. When a well-loved tech company innovates with care, the odds of success shift dramatically in its favor.

This week, I had the privilege of attending the Wisdom & AI Summit in San Francisco, CA. As Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Charles Oppenheimer, grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer, discussed the similarities and differences between the current AI moment and the events that led to the creation of the atomic bomb in 1945, the room stood still. You could hear a pin drop, and the atmosphere became deeply reflective. AI holds immense promise and has already delivered significant value at a record pace. The future of humanity with AI is bright if we can harness this technology within a framework of principles and regulations that make it human-centric. Yet, the uncertainty inherent in its rapid evolution forces us to pause and consider both the opportunities and the threats it presents.

Skinner aptly captures two human tendencies that are becoming particularly dangerous in the age of generative AI. First, the tendency to ascribe intelligence and free will to machines, and second, the assumption that computer output is always more accurate than human output.
