Africa’s banks and fintechs are moving from competition to coexistence: banks bring capital, licences, and institutional trust; fintechs bring distribution, speed, and millions of digital customers.
Lesaka is suggesting South Africa adopt "co-badging" for debit cards to reduce high card interchange rates, which have slowed adoption of the use of card payments in the informal economy in SA. Basically, for an informal merchant, interchange fees on a small transaction make a card payment uneconomical. Potential solution: A co-badged card has two payment network logos on it (like eftpos and Visa), so the merchant's terminal can choose which network processes the payment. In Australia, merchants often route to eftpos because it's cheaper, even though the customer just taps the same card. https://t.co/NphN8YgguJ $LSAK @LesakaTech
ZARU stablecoin's whitepaper is out. Lesaka is one of 4 co-founding companies in ZARU, which has real-world use cases today in products like immediate settlement for merchants (as opposed to waiting for banking hours) and also in cross-border remittances (notoriously slow and expensive in SA). https://t.co/rLuRtKPwhl $LSAK @LesakaTech@ZARUniversal@BankZeroSA

Excellent sell-side initiation by James Slabbert and Charles Russell at Standard Bank, who are becoming the most knowledgeable fintech analysts in Africa. Obviously a lot of work went into this report. Note it is standard for sell side analysts in South Africa to include their financial model in their SECOND note on a company they have initiatied on...Important to note their projections do NOT include the acquisition of BankZero, which Lesaka expects to be approved by the SA government any day.
