Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, was brutally set on fire and murdered by her ex-boyfriend in Kenya. She was allegedly set on fire by her ex-boyfriend outside her home after returning from church on 1 September 2024. It is alleged that an altercation took place before Rebecca’s ex-boyfriend poured petrol on her and set her alight.

Rebecca was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her severe injuries four days later, on 5 September 2024. Originally from Uganda, Rebecca had been living and training in Kenya. Just weeks before her tragic death, she proudly represented her country at the Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the marathon.

Rebecca’s death is a painful reminder of the ongoing epidemic of gender-based violence and femicide that continues to claim the lives of women across our continent and beyond. Let us honour Rebecca’s memory by standing in solidarity with our sisters across Africa and the world. We demand justice and change, and we will not stop until no woman lives in fear.

Kgalalelo Makodi, 32, was shot to death allegedly by her boyfriend in De Beers, Kimberley, on 21 April 2024. The boyfriend allegedly shot Kgalalelo’s brother, who was severely wounded, and then committed suicide. It is alleged that the boyfriend, 36, is a police officer attached to the Crime Intelligence unit in Kimberley. The brother of Kgalalelo survived the shooting. Kgalalelo leaves behind her son, 7.
