Alexandra Mother Demands Justice After Being Wrongly Diagnosed HIV-Positive

Alexandra, Johannesburg — A young mother from Alexandra, Moloko Letlalo, is demanding justice after claiming that staff at Masakhane Clinic wrongly diagnosed her as HIV-positive — a mistake that she says has destroyed her life.

Letlalo, who lives at 14 Vasco in Alexandra, says she gave birth at Masakhane Clinic on 24 November 2024. After delivery, she was informed that she was HIV-positive and was immediately given antiretroviral (ARV) medication for herself and her newborn baby.

“I gave my baby the ARVs for a month,” she said. “But later, when I tested again at Thoko Ngoma Clinic, all my results came back negative. That’s when I realised they had made a terrible mistake.”

The aftermath was devastating. Letlalo says her partner threw her out of their home after hearing about the diagnosis, leaving her and her baby homeless. In the process, she lost her ID and the documents needed to register her child’s birth.

“When I went back to Masakhane Clinic to tell them about the mistake, they said I was in denial,” she explained. “I met a lady from Thoko Ngoma Clinic who helped me retest. After the results came back negative, she called Masakhane, and the manager said she would investigate — but we are still waiting for feedback.”

Letlalo says the experience has left her deeply traumatised and stigmatized. “Even now, my baby’s Road-to-Health card says I am HIV-positive. It makes me feel terrible every time I see it. I want them to take responsibility and pay for what they did to us.”

The Gauteng Department of Health had not been contacted for comment at the time of publication.
