BREAKING: HELL YES! The European Union strikes a CRUSHING blow against Jared Kushner's corrupt resort development by warning Albania that it could endanger their efforts to join the EU.

This scandal just shot through the stratosphere...

“Albania should refrain from actions that could undermine the fulfillment of the closing benchmarks and [we] expect the Albanian authorities to act without delay,” stated a spokesperson for the European Commission.

Kushner's multi-billion dollar project has caused nationwide protests in Albania, with massive crowds taking to the streets to demand that their government block the development. As it turns out, the President's crooked son-in-law is reviled all around the world.

The plutocratic project — which includes a $1.4 billion development on an island and a $4.7 billion deal for a stretch of protected coastline — threatens crucial wildlife habitat for flamingos, turtles, and other animals. The protests have been affectionately nicknamed the "Flamingo Revolution." Because of the risk to wildlife, the EU is warning Albania that they may be in violation of the Union's environmental rules if they allow the project to proceed.

“In the EU accession process, as part of the closing benchmarks for negotiating Chapter 27 on environment and climate change, Albania is expected to align fully with EU legislation in this area, including the Birds and the Habitats Directives,” said the EU spokesperson. They called on Albania to rescind its changes to the Law on Protected Areas and "terminate" a law regarding strategic investments.

Most exciting of all, the spokesperson informed POLITICO that Albania's Minister of Environment Sofjan Jaupaj has informed the European Commission that the construction project has been suspended. A full environmental impact assessment will now be conducted.

“We have already expressed our concerns to the minister of the environment about the potential shortcomings of this project,” the spokesperson added.

The wisest path forward here for Albania is self-evident. Kushner's development is deeply unpopular, designed to create another twisted playground for global oligarchs, sex predators, and war criminals. It does nothing for the Albanian people. And on the other hand, admission to the EU will create a brighter economic future for everyone in the country.

If they must choose between the two, Albania has no choice but to reject Kushner.

Micheál Martin ist grundsätzlich pro-ukrainisch und pro-EU. Aber hier steckt er in einer klassischen Zwickmühle:
475 direkte Jobs in Aughinish. Mehrere hundert indirekte. Foynes und Askeaton – kleine Städte die komplett von der Fabrik abhängen. Wenn Aughinish schließt – sterben diese Gemeinden.
Das ist keine böse Absicht. Das ist das klassische Problem wenn Russland seine Abhängigkeiten tief in europäische Volkswirtschaften eingebaut hat.

Non ho mai scritto a riguardo della raffineria di alluminio ad Aughinish in Irlanda; pensavo erroneamente: quanto alluminio può mai produrre l’Irlanda per la Russia?

Mi sbagliavo. La raffineria di Aughinsh, posseduta dal colosso russo “Rusal” (posseduto dall’oligarca Deripaska) produce un terzo di tutto il (poco) alluminio ancora prodotto in Europa. Tutto questo alluminio è trasportato in Russia dove viene usato per nutrire lo stesso complesso militare industriale che rade al suolo le città ucraine facendo stragi di civili.

Ma lo scandalo è ancora maggiore di quello che potrebbe sembrare: che le sanzioni europee non siano affatto complete e permettano ancora tali follie non era una novità. Quello che personalmente mi ha scandalizzato è il modo in cui i politici irlandesi, incalzati dal bravissimo reporter Caolan, neghino che la raffineria abbia una qualche connessione con il complesso militare russo, nonostante tutto, a partire dalle insegne fuori dalla struttura, porti a tale conclusione.

Questa roba deve finire all’istante. La raffineria va sanzionata, chiusa e basta.
