Let’s PLEASE normalize vulnerability.
Yesterday, we threw an event with +100 founders in NYC. And although the event went great - here’s one thing I didn’t like (with events overall)
Whenever you talk to a founder at an event and ask for example, “How’s your October is going?” - the standard answer is always “It’s going good”.
But when you dig a little bit deeper, start asking more specific questions, or open up about how things are going for your brand - that’s when people start to actually open up and be vulnerable.
Now, the sad thing is that…
A) This is when the best conversations happen, yet few people get to have those open, honest, and meaningful conversations about how things ACTUALLY are going - and what they can do to improve their situation.
B) It’s as though it’s a societal norm that EVERYTHING has to go great at every time of the year.
No.
It doesn’t.
And that’s okay.
What I would love to see is that more founders start to recognize this and understand that the reason we go to these events is to learn from each other, connect with each other, and ultimately develop deep relationships with each other.
Instead of pretending like everything is going well, especially with everything going on in the world…
Why not just allow yourself to open up, listen to what others are doing, getting feedback, and getting better?
As they say, “Misery loves company”, and sometimes - all we need is to know that we’re not alone in our rocky boats.
Because the interesting thing is also;
A lot of people that I speak to say they’ve had a TOUGH October. So have we.
And it raises the question as to how November will be?
But before you comment, your thoughts.
Remind yourself: It’s okay to be vulnerable.
I’ve booked meetings with some of the worlds largest luxury brands in the world in the last 60 days.
