Basically we tried not to re-invent the wheel and used as a starting framework a package called DunGen by @AegonGames which was eventually modified to make sure that some type of rooms always appear. The algorithm basically works like this: it creates a path from start point to finish. In the middle it generates branches following some constraints and rules given. If the constraint is not met -> it backtracks to the starting of the branch and tries another option for X times. Otherwise it skips the branch and goes to the next (based on how many branches you want to generate along the way).
I believe this also work for 2d games as well!

The real challenge was aligning that with Unity’s networking for smooth co-op.
It took some wrestling… but we made it work!
