Moreover, concepts for Bluestreak included fitting the HO2 centaur upper stage + 4 SRBs, giving it the ability to launch satellites of several tonnes to orbit.

This would have been relatively cheap. The big capital spending had been made. And this is before spiral development of Bluestreak and engines.

Britain missed an enormous opportunity. Thousands of skilled jobs. Prestige.

Now all that is left is the massive test stands at RAF Spadeadam.

Here's what Rowan Williams said about the "grooming gangs," in a recent piece for The Guardian. You'll note, first of all, that he put the phrase in scare quotes, because, of course, he doesn't really believe there actually are organised groups of Muslim men deliberately targeting white working-class girls for abuse and even murder because they're white and not Muslim.

What he believes, rather, is that there have been "events," mere brute facts, like the interaction of particles at the atomic level; something for which, ultimately, there can be no human blame. There were "institutional failures," which might as well be a description of a sewage overflow caused by mismanagement of a local drainage system.

Anyway, hold your nose as you read this quotation:

Think of the ongoing “grooming gangs” scandal: an undeniably appalling series of events, institutional failures and victim-blaming that has been transformed into a narrative that suggests any “alien” is likely to be a sexual predator, since their predatory behaviour is a direct consequence of their religious and cultural background.

For decades, as archbishop of Canterbury, Williams was one of the principal arbiters of morality in Britain. Not only was he in a position to speak out about the grooming gangs, he was also in a position to speak out about sex abuse in the Church of England. He could have channelled the evangelical zeal of the great Thomas Cranmer and rooted out offenders from his Church with a righteous fury. He could also have spoken up for the girls of Rotherham, Oldham and all the towns and cities across England where girls were groomed and abused. Cranmer was burned at the stake for what he believed in. Instead, Williams chose to make mealy-mouthed excuses and to preside over the continuing decline of England's national Church, from the comfort of Lambeth Palace.

In truth, Williams should have been confined to theological school or an Oxbridge chaplaincy for his career as a minister. He could have spent all day opining over the loving-kindness of God in the Senior Common Room, published a few largely irrelevant articles about C S Lewis and then shuffled off into retirement in a secluded parish somewhere. Far less harm would have been done.
