CTV just played Mark Carney and François-Philippe Champagne saying Canada is creating jobs at two times, then four times, the U.S. rate.

Then they put Statistics Canada on the same screen.

August: Canada lost 42,000 jobs. Economists expected a gain of about 15,000. Unemployment sat at 6.4 percent only because the labour force itself shrank. Full-time work dropped 36,000. Ontario and Quebec took the worst of it. Wage growth slowed to 2 percent, the weakest in years outside the pandemic.

That print landed before the new counter-tariffs even kick in. The same government that sold itself as the grown-up in the room is now lining up dollar-for-dollar duties that raise the price of what Canadians actually buy. Trump’s tariffs hit our exports. Ottawa’s answer hits our grocery carts, phones, and tools. That is not toughness. That is a tax with a flag on it.

They will say do not spin it negative. Forty-two thousand families do not need a spin. They need a government that stops talking like the numbers are optional.
