Russia’s targeting of Ukrainian heritage sites tells us all we need to know. Any lingering pretence of moral legitimacy has been reduced to rubble alongside the buildings themselves. For a nation so obsessed with its own suffering, Russia has shown remarkably little regard for anyone else’s. It is not the estranged cousin of Europe; it is the belligerent neighbour who steals your belongings and then complains about being excluded from the garden party.

A fireworks and light show commemorates a new tower at the Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona after a blessing by Pope Leo XIV.

Thousands of people attended the mass at the church that has taken 144 years to build already - and is still unfinished despite millions of visitors every year.

The giant new Jesus Christ tower was completed in February, making the basilica the tallest church in the world at 172.5 metres.

Full completion is expected in about a decade.

The ceremony was held on the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí's death in 1926.
