Thank you, thank you, thank you — to @cbcideas, to Philip and Pauline, to @crowstheatre, to @NahlahAyed and to the beautiful people of Toronto who came out today. It was so special to share a Sunday morning with you.
“There is so much that cannot be brought back, that I mourn because I cannot hold it anymore.” In a new Weekend Essay, Hanif Abdurraqib writes about the uses and misuses of the things that cannot be recovered. https://t.co/NM1H4DCWM6
NEW: @WhatsApp says Israeli mercenary spyware company #Paragon targeted scores of users around world.
The infection happened with no interaction. No link to click or attachment to open.
This is called a "zero-click" attack.
WA says targets included journalists & members of civil society.
They dismantled the attack vector & notified users.
Good.
We at @citizenlab shared some info instrumental to their investigation of the vector.
This is a BIG deal. Here's why 1/
NEW - As part of continued reorganization in @Dave_Eby’s office, @megasali has been promoted from policy director to the premier’s “principal secretary” - a new role in the office designed to lead policy development for government.
The last time I spoke in Toronto the dear @JoshuaSealy asked a question about Palestine from the audience. My answer didn’t air, but this essay captures the emotional range I am in, remain in, on this issue. “Dead children have a way of clarifying things.” https://t.co/xfvcxwrYce
my experience of charismatic people is that they create a universal sensation that they are on the same wavelength as you, no matter who you are, how well you know each other, or what you have in common: https://t.co/Wm4AZLHHOV
I adore this idea of “night science” and treasure a sort of “night justice” in the (admittedly weird) litigation we do. The best ideas always come over late night drinks and dinners with the other lawyers, journalists, psychologists, artists and political thinkers in my life.
It’s crazy how talking with a science buddy is simultaneously what’s most likely to move the project forward and the thing that’s least prioritized in our schedule.
Just realized this was online! My submissions to the Foreign Interference Commission, highlighting our longstanding work @citizenlab on the Charter implications of new national security powers and on digital transnational repression. https://t.co/N3xntQ424r

Despite their resilience, targets reported experiencing chilling effects of these attacks, which profoundly altered women’s sense of security and their social relations. Respondents described feelings of exhaustion, stress and anxiety, burnout, sleeplessness, and depression.
📢 NEW REPORT: No Escape: The Weaponization of Gender for the Purposes of Digital Transnational Repression. We investigate the rising trend of gender-based digital transnational repression by drawing on the lived experiences of 85 women human rights defenders living in exile across the globe.

For real, “That Time Our FOIAs Finally Paid Off” is the best news genre. We’ve got a grand purpose, we’ve got powerful adversaries, we’ve got supernatural forces beyond our control, we’ve got ordeals, holy grails, bad odds, the damning passage of time. 10/10 would read anytime.
I do a lot of FOIA and I’m used to stonewalling. But Sweden surprised me. After 3 years of telling me no, a high level official at Sweden’s welfare agency @fk_media accidentally left me on cc, writing “Now we must hope that we are done with him.”
The Citizen Lab’s @KateRobertson_ testified before the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Veterans Affairs @SenateCA on Bill C-26. Robertson calls for stronger judicial oversight, protection for encryption, and transparency obligations in Bill C-26 to protect the rights and freedoms of people in Canada, and the security of Canada’s telecom networks.

Toronto: come see @leilanifarha this Sunday Dec. 1, talking about what happens when home loses its poetry, and how we can 'return home.' It's the latest instalment of @cbcideas at @crowstheatre, hosted by @nahlahayed. Free tix here: https://t.co/jsEFrpv7HM
Honestly, I look forward to @lifewinning’s Perfect Sentences every week. Is this + @theprophetpizza’s Opulent Tips the perfect Sunday newsletter spread?
A great pleasure to speak with @lex_is@F_Berard and @svens_telemaque for this one. A truly watershed moment for equality rights in Quebec.
