Multiple generations of Americans know our lives have been stolen from us
“That is diabolical. We don't stand a chance, you guys. We're screwed.”
THREAD. It's important for all people of good will to understand the Laken Riley Act before the Senate votes on it tomorrow. It’s unconstitutional. It’s horrific in every word and clause. But there is a deeper, more imminent violence lurking beneath its hate-filled text.

If I may, there’s something I need to get off my chest.
As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days.
I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News correspondent, which I’ll add here:
1. Enough with Both-sides-ism
When one side lies intentionally and repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew.
2. Prioritize Live Fact-Checking
Rigorous and robust fact-checking is the best defense against misinformation, intentional lies, and deflection.
If Trump says the sky is green, the story isn’t that the sky is now green; the story is that the sky is still blue and Trump got it wrong.
3. Ask Lawmakers Hard Questions
Ask about the fundamental principles of democracy. Push them to go on the record that Biden won the 2020 election.
Ask if they support the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
This writing is not to offer any claim of knowing it all. Your correspondent has made his share of mistakes, but after more than seven decades I believe I have picked up a few useful guideposts.
Good journalism is always worth it. Our democracy depends on it.

There’s no way anyone truly believes that teenagers in tents on college lawns w/ posters & chants requires men with guns to show up.
The police are summoned to threaten, to repress, to create fear. This is the core of their role.
It was never about community safety.
When you’re experiencing homelessness, the need for housing *eclipses* any other issue.
People who are given a safe & stable place to live before addressing other less critical needs are more likely to attain long term housing stability.

Targeting aid workers is a war crime.
Targeting journalists is a war crime.
Targeting hospitals is a war crime.
@POTUS must stop enabling war crimes, end the United States' complicity in genocide, and facilitate a lasting ceasefire now.
The seven angels killed on a @WCKitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity.
The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.
You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population. https://t.co/atgx5cvioa
Congratulations to our government. They won’t protect us from unsafe drinking water, processed foods, homelessness or the unfair labor practices, but they will protect us from TikTok.
The House of Representatives just passed a bill that could ban TikTok.
Not raising the minimum wage.
Not lowering healthcare costs.
Not lowering housing costs.
Not lowering childcare costs.
TikTok.
