Happy to share my new study w/ Sol Hart in @ClimaticChange_. We experimentally tested the effects of news tweets that referred to either climate change, climate emergency, or climate crisis. https://t.co/i27rcZ4ZMP
We find that manipulated congruency has limited effects on people's attitudes and that *perceptions* of image-text congruency may matter more than actual congruency in shaping audiences’ understanding of and engagement with climate change news.
Very proud of this new paper led by my advisee @afroozmsl. It tests how audiences react when the text and visuals in climate change news stories are incongruent (e.g., the text emphasizes the severe effects of heatwaves, but the visuals emphasize “fun-in-the-sun” beachgoing).
🌎 Our new paper on the image-text congruency of online climate change news and its effects is out by @jmcquarterly! @lfeldman17 and I introduce "perceived congruency" and argue that congruency is partially in the eyes of the beholder and may not be treated as a uniform concept.
