@eguti050@mernakamel958@KatryaLy@abhornUCRedu I agree part of the disproportionate representation in admissions is due to a class issue also and not a race issue alone. Is it possible to ever come to a point where racial equity is visible without also improving the US’s socioeconomic issues? #ucr50@KatryaLy
White men are the largest represented group in college sports & affirmative action is supposed to help alleviate the imbalance in representation for other races/ethnicities. Ironically, race neutral admissions seem to only boost the advantages for white students #ucr50@KatryaLy
@MSauce024@KatryaLy I agree the NCAA is out to make a profit without regard for student athletes. They hide behind this idea of “amateurism” to keep student athletics from taking a portion of the profits. How can these governing bodies be better kept accountable? #ucr50@KatryaLy
I have never considered before how little autonomy student athletes have in comparison to the gen pop. In terms of social media, I can understand where the practice of discretion is a good one as one athlete’s post can represent the entire athletic department #ucr50@KatryaLy
@MSauce024@KatryaLy It to have been made with good intentions, but it takes so much cooperation from athletic departments that sexist staff members seems not willing to take. This is a societal issue that goes beyond sports, and it will likely take much longer to see real equality #ucr50@KatryaLy
Why are so few women in leadership positions in college sports? It shocks me that even for many women’s sports teams, there are far and few female coaches employed. How can we support women athletes all the way up the ladder of leadership? #ucr50@KatryaLy
@lisscastrom@abhornUCRedu It must be so daunting to have to face both racism and misogyny in an already highly demanding lifestyle. Could programs, services, or staff training be provided so that student athlete WOC are better supported in both their athletic and academic communities? #ucr50@KatryaLy
Within sports that primarily comprise of white student athletes, there is low compositional diversity and therefore less exposure to athletes or students of other races/ethnicities. How can students in somewhat segregated sports work on changing this isolation? #ucr50@KatryaLy
@iitzel_nandezz@KatryaLy I honestly couldn’t even imagine taking on the load that college athletes take on, especially when pressure and testing come from every direction in your life. I could easily see this leading to depression, anxiety, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. #ucr50@KatryaLy
Where do these prejudices and stereotypes toward student athletes in higher education stem from besides entertainment media? Student athletes in movies and shows are portrayed dumb, bullying jocks who are doted on and protected by the community #ucr50@KatryaLy
@acast306@KatryaLy I agree! The fact that they have a full course plus 20 hours of practice leaves little time and energy for working part time. For all they bring in for their performance, they should be compensated with more than a scholarship #ucr50@KatryaLy
The racial disparity shown in college athlete graduation rates is especially disappointing when student athletes as a whole are generally reported to have higher graduation rates than the general population of students. https://t.co/Bhcgq8HHgi #ucr50@KatryaLy
@akell001@KatryaLy It is honestly hard for me to see a justification behind the exorbitant salaries college coaches are paid if the athletic department truly does reflect the college’s academic mission. I agree professors are underpaid in comparison to the fortune college coaches are granted.
As someone who is not particularly involved in sports, it seems ridiculous to me that one of the largest expenditures is for coaches salary. I understand how much money the actual students are bringing in for playing, but does the credit really go to the coaches? #ucr50@KatryaLy
Is it a distinct part of American culture that colleges will spend abundantly more money on athletics rather than on educating students? Could this incentivize young students to put more value into pursuing careers in sports rather than arts, sciences, etc? #ucr50@KatryaLy
@MSauce024@KatryaLy I agree. Seeing as how many colleges lend more funding to the athletic programs to give exorbitant pay to coaches rather than academic programs, and how student athletes train, practice, and work long hours to bring in so much revenue, they should be fairly compensated #ucr50
